Monday Morning Diversion: OK Go Are All Needing/Getting On You

Monday Morning Diversion: OK Go Are All Needing/Getting On You

OK Go continue their streak of memorable videos constructed through partnerships that recall ye olde days of when the upper crust (in this case corporations) acted as patrons to the arts. And, if such arrangements continue to allow a band like OK Go unfettered creativity without having to beg for alms, we're O.K. with that. more ›

PHOTOS: OK Go At Metro

             + 8 more

OK Go brought their show to Metro last weekend, and while the boys may now live in California the concert certainly felt like a celebratory homecoming. The band took the stage by storm and kicked out an energetic set that never seemed to flag over nearly 90 minutes. Their latest album continues to grow on us over repeated listens and while some accuse the band of resorting to gimmickry to promote their music we saw a band at the height of their powers. more ›

OK Go Goes Indie

OK Go Goes Indie

Following numerous problems with their label, OK Go is ditching the Majors and fleeing EMI Records. This isn't wholly surprising due to some recent friction, and it was hinted the band was seeking outside help when State Farm prominently sponsored the band's recent mind-boggling video for "This Too Shall Pass" off their latest album, Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky. more ›

OK Go Builds The Wickedest Game Of Mousetrap Evar

OK Go Builds The Wickedest Game Of Mousetrap Evar

We really loved the first DIY pass at the video for OK Go's latest single "This Too Shall Pass," primarily because we have a super weak spot for Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk." We love this second video treatment of the same tune because it reminds us just how frickin' much we loyed triggering the Mousetrap gameboard when we were kids. more ›

WTF? An OK Go Video Remix Challenge

Now that the lads in OK Go have roused talk around their excellent new album by dissing their label's video sharing policies, they're recruiting the fans to make a video of their own. Take the raw footage from the green-screened "WTF" video and put your own spin on it and win a ... well, they list no prozes so maybe you just win some small amount of online infamy. Anyway, grab the footage and get to it! more ›

Thursday Early Afternoon Diversion + DOWNLOAD: OK Go

Thursday Early Afternoon Diversion + DOWNLOAD: OK Go

Well, you already know we like OK Go's new album. And you know the band has a penchant for releasing inventive videos, so it should come as no surprise that the second single off their new disc would include a delightful live performance of "This Too Shall Pass" with a marching band. Though we can't help but wonder where they got the inspiration from ... was it Fleetwood Mac or Andrew Bird? more ›

Rockin' Our Turntable: OK Go

Rockin' Our Turntable: OK Go

OK Go initially won our hearts through their quirky art-pop when they were based in Chicago and gigged regularly at The Empty Bottle. They moved to California, released their debut and enjoyd moderate success. Their sophomore effort injected a whole lot more rock into the mix with extremely winning results, and we dug 'em even more. They seemed poised to hit the big time -- in no small part due to an extremely entertaining DIY approach to music videos -- and then ... settled into nearly four years of relative silence on the album front. more ›

OK GO To Tour; Totally Skip Chicago (But Their Hearts Are In The Right Place)

OK GO To Tour; Totally Skip Chicago (But Their Hearts Are In The Right Place)

OK Go is hitting the road to preview songs from their new album, due this summer. Sadly they are only visiting the coasts and have obviously forgotten the city that gave them their start, allowed them to plaster their posters on ever available surface in Wicker Park, and attended their sweatbox Empty Bottle shows during the band's (relative) adolescence. Hmpf! more ›

O. Say Can You C.?

O. Say Can You C.?

Chicagoist has a nice variety of friends who provide myriad viewpoints on myriad subjects, including new music. Our college friends, for instance, hit us up for tickets to the Daughtry show at the Double Door a few weeks back, while our snobby (geeky?) hipster pals were trying hard not to get caught enjoying themselves at Lily Allen in Austin during SXSW. Chicagoist’s good-times party-gal sister likes anything with a “fun beat,” from commercial country to... more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and we here across the Gothamist network wanted to express would like to tell you, in the spirit of the holiday, just how much we love you, our readers. Don't let it get to your heads, though. There are plenty of things we love, you included. Just be glad you're not amongst the things we hate. SFist saw their beloved mayor enter rehab, and they loved the... more ›

Chicago Groups Get Grammy'd

Chicago Groups Get Grammy'd

We know there’ll be a resounding chorus of “Who cares?” in the comments on this post, but we’d be remiss in our music coverage if we didn’t acknowledge those Chicagoans who pulled down Grammy award nominations this week. Continuing to build hope for the future of hip-hop, West Side hip-hopper Lupe Fiasco picked up three nominations (best rap solo performance, album and song). Lupe celebrated the nomination by signing 256 new endorsement deals, including one... more ›

Decent Days and Nights

Decent Days and Nights

First off, we regret to announce that Favourite Sons have pulled out of their show at The Empty Bottle tonight. Bummer, huh? Here's the official word as to why: Favourite Sons have to cancel their upcoming shows. The band is extremely disappointed to have to do so, but singer Ken Griffith has fallen ill and simply cannot continue on until this clears up - even singing has become painful due to his upper respiratory situation.... more ›

Work It Out

Work It Out

With Lollapalooza this weekend, it seems only right that we revisit the dance craze that was OK Go’s “A Million Ways” video. The choreography had its first public performance during an early set on the first day of last year’s Lolla and went on to be a viral video phenomenon. Chicagoist spotted this new video yesterday on YouTube for “Here It Goes Again” and it’s been making the rounds on the local morning news... more ›

Nintendo: A Casualty in Darwin's Evolution

Nintendo: A Casualty in Darwin's Evolution

Chicagoist would like to set one thing straight: A digital jukebox and electronic poker machine are not a fair trade for a Nintendo entertainment system. The new management at Darwin’s (1935 N. Damen) has removed the Nintendo system from the front bar, and we could not be more disheartened. Many a Saturday night, when tired of the typical bar scene, Chicagoist would take refuge at Darwin’s. We’d order a few beers, play some Super Mario... more ›

Free Concerts at the Auto Show

Free Concerts at the Auto Show

There's nothing better than getting somethin' for nothin'. Well, maybe driving with the top down while blaring music, but that won't happen for at least a couple more months. At the 2006 Chicago Auto Show this year there will be free concerts taking place at the Pontiac Garage. We missed last night's concert with the Bo Deans, but tonight on a first-come first-serve basis the Redwalls will play at 7 pm. Two more shows... more ›

Music and Movies: 2005 In Review

Music and Movies: 2005 In Review

For Chicago's entertainment beats, 2005 is best summed up by the phrase: change is good. At this time last year, if you had told us that 2005 would bring not one, but two world class rock festivals to Chicago’s parks, we’d have patted you on the head and cooed “Aw, you’re so cute.” But wonders never cease and so it was that the city of Chicago finally realized that in order for Chicago to become... more ›

Re-Viewed: OK Go at the Metro

Re-Viewed: OK Go at the Metro

Chicagoist last saw OK Go when the first cries of "next big thing outta Chicago" were heard and were not that impressed. Friday night at the Metro, however, it was possible to see why those cries are being heard again. OK Go are a band that is not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve and they let those influences show from the 2nd song "No Sign of Life" which was very Pixies-esque... more ›

Oh No Oh Where Oh Where Is OK Go?

Oh No Oh Where Oh Where Is OK Go?

Chicago can be a cruel habitat for local bands that make it big. Just look at how quickly folks turned on The Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill and Liz Phair as their careers progressed. Okay, Phair deserved the hostile response once she started to seriously suck but that’s beside the point. OK Go jumped to head of the backlash pack with the release of their Major Label debut a few years ago. You couldn’t open a... more ›

OK! Go Catch Dance Fever!

OK! Go Catch Dance Fever!

Though it was a weekend filled with good music and hope for the future, this summer’s Lollapalooza lacked the kind of moments that keep people talking about it for years to come. There were two exceptions though: the onstage pairing of Brian Jonestown Massacre with the Dandy Warhols and the choreographed dance moves of OK Go as they debuted the song “A Million Ways”. After closing out their set on the second day of Lolla,... more ›

The Beginning Of Something Great?

The Beginning Of Something Great?

Though it may have been Lollapalooza in name, it wasn’t exactly Lollapalooza in spirit as Chicago hosted what may become the next great destination rock festival after organizers work out some of the kinks in the festival's rebirth. If nothing else, Lollapalooza organizer Capital Sports Entertainment deserves credit for making the fest happen at all considering Chicago’s long-standing animosity to rock acts. But a lack of musical diversity and the tightly controlled atmosphere meant the... more ›
