Old Style Goes Back to the Future

Pabst, reacting to the success of "Schlitz Original recipe" and the continuing solid sales of PBR, announced that Old Style is returning to its original kräusening recipe to compete with "premium" brands. That is, if you consider Bud, Miller and Coors to be "premium."

Weekend before last we were at a birthday party at Quencher's and the bar was at least four deep with customers the entire length. It was the third consecutive year that the hosts of this party set a record bar ring for the bar. Normally, we'd be sampling from Quencher's extensive beer menu, but we're getting old and wanted a drink fast. $2 cans of LaCrosse Lager was music to our ears.

Baseball is always about statistics, numbers, charts and rankings, but this season of Cubs baseball is going to be all about one number. That number, of course, being "one hundred." Be prepared to hear about the hundred World-Series-Championship-free years at least a million times this season. So as the Lovable Losers get ready to tear the scab off of another season, we thought now would be an opportune time to look back at the park from when things like "naming rights" were a long time off.

Maybe he hasn't made Keith Olbermann's nightly list yet, but Sam Zell is quickly cementing his place among the "Worst People in Chicago" as he continues to antagonize Chicagoans since his takeover of the Tribune Co.

  • Takashi's eponymous restaurant is now open in the former Scylla space on 1952 N. Damen. We love, love, loved Scylla, and were sad to see it's demise. But we could probably get over our sadness by trying Takashi menu items like Trio of Home Made Tofu; Steamed Peeky-toe Crab Meat with Organic Egg Custard, Shimeji Mushroom, Sea Urchin, Caviar, Truffle-White Soy Glaze; and Sheep’s Milk Panacotta, Yuzu gelee, Green Tea Macaroons.
  • This year's edition of the Great American Beer Festival is in the books, and Illinois breweries racked up an impressive 16 medals. Both Pabst (their corporate headquarters are in suburban Woodridge, so they qualified as an Illinois beer company) and Goose Island took home four medals each. Pabst earned respective gold and silver medals for Lone Star and Old Style (American-style cream ale or lager), and repeated the feat for Old Milwaukee Light and PBR...

For the first three games of the Cubs-Giants series, slugger Barry Bonds kept himself planted to the visitors' dugout bench for the most part. Cubs fans got little chance to boo Bonds as one pinch hit at-bat was his only playing time. For those who were patient, however, Bonds made up for his absence by putting on quite a show on Thursday. Mired in an 0-21 batting slump while racing toward Hank Aaron's all-time home...

    - Craig Stebic had his divorce petition dismissed. We're guessing he got no argument from his wife.

Chicagoist recently opened our monthly Comcast bill to get a $156 surprise. That works out to $1,872 a year for cable TV and internet access. Now in all fairness, we do have a few fancy extras: HD, DVR, and HBO. But even with the alphabet soup, we were alarmed by the ever increasing heights of our Comcast bill. As it turns out, we had gotten used to the promotional pricing we received when we started...

The last time Chicagoist tackled eating on the Southwest Side, our map reading skills were called into question. So, knowing that this week's installment of "Cheap Eats" is located in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, we'll let you debate whether this qualifies as a south side cheap eat, or a west side cheap eat. We're here to tell you about the food, which is worth the trip, with or without a compass. When Chicagoist last...

If bars were ranked on a four-star scale, Five Star would get three big gold ones. Located at 1427 W. Chicago, Five Star is a relatively new addition to the neighborhood. Opened in May, the spot already draws a trendy, but laid-back crowd. The place is casual enough to wear jeans and Chuck Taylors, but upscale enough to show up in an after-work suit and tie and fit right in. The window-lined front wall provided...

Chicagoist doesn't frequent the Skylark as often as we should. It's close to home; not as close as some other places, but close enough that it shouldn't be ignored completely. Located on Halsted, where 22nd Street separates Pilsen and Bridgeport (call it "Bridgepilsen"), Skylark is the sister tavern to Hanna's favorite Wicker Park hangout. Although it does draw its clientele mainly from the Pilsen artists' community, Skylark has also become a haven for longtime working-class...

Thanks to an incentive-laden deal with the state, Pabst Brewing Company is moving their corporate headquarters from San Antonio (WTF? Milwaukee was so bad they had to move to San Antonio?) to suburban Woodridge, according to an article in today's Sun-Times. The deal, which gives Pabst a nearly $1 million tax incentive and training funding package for 31 executives, to be hired from the area. Pabst itself ifs spending $2.4 million to lease a facility...

Metromix’s annual Rock ‘n’ Vote contest is on again with ten local bands vying for a chance to play a show at Metro. Voting continues now through midnight Sunday. Currently leading the vote tallies are The Lifeline, The Emerald Lizards, and Otter Petter (which sounds like it would be nice work if you could get it). One of the bands we’re hoping gets a few more votes thrown its way is Reptoids. They’re a four-person...

Chicago police have issued a warning about a string of strong-arm robberies in the Lakeview area. Apparently groups of two to four men are targeting men walking home alone in the wee hours on weekends, stealing wallets and demanding ATM card PINs. The robberies are all the more sinister because the alleged assailants are black guys(!) robbing white guys(!) in their own neighborhood(!) Chicagoist will be sure to pass along headlining news stories about robberies...

While the Cubs have suffered nearly a century of team futility, that doesn't mean they haven't had some of the best players of all time on the team over the years. Last year, we saw Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg elected to the Hall of Fame. This year's lone selection is Bruce Sutter, yet another former Cub. He was voted in by the BBWAA, receiving votes from 76.9% of the voters (75% req. for entry)....

While the recent Band Aid 20 single did little more than make most Americans say “Wait…Bob Geldof’s still alive?”, music is often the best way to people's hearts, minds and--most importantly: wallets. As private donations to various relief efforts in this country have topped more than $200 million, several local music venues have started efforts to assist those in need. HotHouse in the South Loop leads the pack with a pair of benefit shows. No...
