Taquerias in Chicago are so prevalent that if you can't find one, you aren't trying. Even though the good ones tend to stand out like oases in a desert, some fly just underneath the radar of the recognition they deserve.

Tank Restaurant’s bánh mì is damn near a perfect sandwich. Tank's open air restaurant with community seating is a welcome, busy place to sample Vietnamese fare while sitting next to a friendly stranger. This traditional street food is a Vietnamese baguette / French roll filled with meat, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeño, picked daikon radish and carrots, and a touch of soy sauce. You can choose from marinated beef, pork, or chicken – each slightly sweet and spicy.

Two years ago, in our review of Eleven City Diner on South Wabash, we compared Brad Rubin's tribute to classic Jewish delis and diners to the Blues Brothers. We said it was "too good to be a parody, not good enough to be the real thing." That still holds true, which is a blessing and a curse. Shortly after ours and other reviews started pouring in, Rubin pulled the plug on all night weekend service, which would have brought Eleven City closer to the genuine article. The prices are nothing to laugh at, either. We've had more than one friend chew us out on the prices after recommending the place.
