Crosstown Classic War Of Words

Another week, another great war of words between the North Side baseball team and they're South Side counterparts. Cubs manager Lou Piniella started things when he pointed out the attendance spike at U.S. Cellular Field for the Cubs series, which was much larger than attendance at last week's Sox games versus the Dodgers. Never one to mince words about either team, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen replied, "Because our fans are not stupid like Cubs fans. They know we're [expletive]...Wrigley Field is just a bar." Of course, it didn't help matters that Piniella had previously accused White Sox security members of leaking information about the Lou-Milton Battle of the Head Cases to reporters. But, hey, at least we have one more Sox-Cubs game left, a make-up from a first-round rain-out, in which to see tempers boil over. [Tribune via Deadspin]

City Gears Up for Cubs-Sox Series

Our two beloved baseball teams face off this week for the first time this season, and as usual the hoopla and hype over the series begins well in advance of the first pitch. Never one to shy away from taking the first shot, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen let his true feelings for the Friendly Confines be known on Sunday: "One thing about Wrigley Field, I puke every time I go there." He continued, "That's just to be honest. And if Cub fans don't like the way I talk about Wrigley Field, it's just Wrigley Field. I don't say anything about the fans or anything now. But Wrigley Field, they got to respect my opinion. That's the way I feel."

Will Ozzie Make Wise Decision Soon?

We're only two games into the 2009 season, and already White Sox fans are getting restless for a change at the top of the batting order. Never really sold on manager Ozzie Guillen's selection of Dewayne Wise to bat lead off, the fans have quickly grown frustrated with the lack of production from the journeyman center fielder. Fans booed him at the Cell during Wednesday's game. But Ozzie's sticking with his man... for now.

Getz Picked by Sox

When the White Sox opened camp last month, there were a number of positions that remained unfilled, with numerous players to compete for the starting jobs in center field, at second base and in the starting rotation.

Sox Reach Out to Fans at SoxFest

While the other baseball in team in town still disregards online media, Chicagoist had full access to this weekend's SoxFest, the annual winter festivities for White Sox fans and players. The three day kickoff to the 2009 season, SoxFest included town hall seminars, memorabilia for sale, autograph sessions with players, and interactive games and activities for Sox fans.

For the fourth night in a row, the White Sox came up on the short end of a game critical to their chances of making the postseason. Hosting the Cleveland Indians, the Sox saw an early lead turn into a big deficit and were unable to rally back before losing 11-8.

The White Sox found yet another way to lose to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, losing 7-6 in 10 innings despite jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. With this series sweep, the Twins leapfrogged over the Sox to gain possession of first place in the AL Central, meaning the South Siders are currently on the outside looking in for the playoffs.

The White Sox had their ace on the mound Wednesday night, but it made no difference as the Sox dropped another game to the Minnesota Twins 3-2. The South Siders now cling to the absolute slimmest of margins -- a 1/2 game lead for the AL Central title.

Oh, that cantankerous Ozzie Guillen. Even as a Cubs fan, I have always enjoyed Ozzie's refreshingly straight-forward, hold-nothing-back approach. In an era of calculated sound bites, it's nice to hear some emotion and honesty. Those wacky kids from MadTV think so, too.

In the heat of a division race, with a pitching staff that's seen its ERA climb in each of the past four months, the last thing the White Sox needed was to lose a part of their starting rotation. In fact, the Sox were hoping to get back a key component of their rotation when Jose Contreras, who'd been out since July 13 because of elbow tendinitis, pitched Saturday night. Instead, they lost Contreras to an Achilles tendon rupture that will end his season, if not his career.

A new school has opened in Chicago’s Medical District. The Easter Seals Therapeutic School and Center for Autism Research, a $32 million project, is specifically designed to meet the special needs of students with autism, emotional behavior disorders and severe learning disabilities.

The White Sox limp home after a 10-game road trip that most certainly did not end on a high note Sunday. The team lost 14-3 to the lowly Kansas City Royals, in a game that saw a bench clearing brawl and numerous ejections.

"He grazes with a new friend, a miniature horse named Jackson that could easily walk right under him." —Adorable story about Chance, a huge horse rescued from last year's massive truck crash in which nearly 60 horses were injured.

Not much changed after Ozzie Guillen's Sunday rant. While he met with Sox GM Kenny Williams on Tuesday, the team's roster remained the same. The coaching staff remained the same. And Ozzie Guillen remains their manager, Jay Mariotti's wishes be damned.

We've entered June in historic fashion, with the Cubs and White Sox both in first place in their divisions. In addition, the Cubs have the best record in baseball at this point for the first time since... 1908.

The White Sox, in an attempt to break their batting slump, decorated their clubhouse with two blow-up dolls, surrounded and propped up by bats with signs over their breasts that said "You've Got to Push" and "Let's Go White Sox."

The Chicago Blackhawks honored the NIU victims last night with above decal, which they'll wear on their helmets again tomorrow night in St. Louis and Wednesday night here against Minnesota. And Ozzie Guillen and co. were wearing NIU hats at spring training. [Blackhawks, Uniwatch]

How many times have we seen this? A player seems likely headed out of town, and Kenny Williams begins the smear campaign against that player and his agent in order to shift blame. He did so to Magglio Ordonez after the 2004 season. And there were numerous comments suggesting that Mark Buehrle was set on signing with his hometown Cardinals as a free agent, only to see the Sox's Ace sign a longterm extension last season. But had he been traded, that would have made Mark look like the bad guy, right?

While the Cubs and their fans held their annual love-in last weekend, this past weekend the rest of us gathered at the Palmer House Hilton to celebrate and commiserate with fellow White Sox fans. Given the airing of grievances by fans and feats of strength by team management, it could very well have been renamed SoxFestivus.

Chicagoist certainly doesn't envy White Sox GM Kenny Williams and the difficult task he has to rebuild a team that lost 90 games in 2007. On Tuesday, he once again was overmatched by the opposition and missed the ball on potential help for his club. Recent reports suggested that the Sox were close to landing third baseman Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins — a player that Ozzie Guillen referred to as his "fourth son."...

Chicagoist was left scratching our head when we heard the rumors than an extension to White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen's deal was in the works. With two years remaining on his current deal and his team with the worst record in baseball, the rumors should have been that he was about to get canned. But for some reason, Sox general manager Kenny Williams decided he needed to lock Guillen up until 2012. Five more years...

Chicagoist checked our calendars and it's not April Fool's Day, so we're not sure why there are media reports that a contract extansion for White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen is in the works. At least those are the rumors that WMVP AM 1000's baseball beat reporter Bruce Levine said recently. When asked, Guillen denied any talks of an extension with either Sox GM Kenny Williams or team owner Jerry Reinsdorf. Williams similarly denied contract talks,...

Baseball's trading deadline came and went quietly yesterday afternoon, with only Rob Mackowiak needing to pack up his locker in the Sox clubhouse.

The Cubs held the White Sox to just two runs over three games, as they swept this weekend's series and ended up winning five of six overall in the crosstown showdown. Carlos Zambrano out dueled Mark Buehrle in Friday's game, limiting the Sox to one run and three hits as the Cubs won 5-1. The Sox bullpen let any chance for a comeback slip away by letting up three ninth inning runs. On Saturday, the...

All is not well on the North Side as we all know, but things ain't much better on the South Side either. While not quite fist fights and on-field tantrums, the White Sox have resorted to some unusual measures to try and awaken their team from its slumber.

This is not a fun time to be a baseball fan in Chicago. Whether a White Sox or Cubs fan, you no doubt have that sinking feeling about your team's prospects for the postseason after they were swept this week. The Cubs lost 9-0 to the Florida Marlins on Wednesday, following a day full of meetings. The players held one. So did management. Didn't help, at least on Wednesday. The players felt they needed to...

In theater, "breaking a leg" is good luck. In baseball, not so much. No, it's definitely bad news for the White Sox that versatile utility player Pablo Ozuna will miss three months with a broken leg, which he broke during Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Any weekend that has the Cubs and White Sox playing each other is exciting, but since the Sox added A.J. Pierzynski to the mix he seems to have developed an uncanny ability to fan the flames even more. Remember his little run-in with Cubs catcher Michael Barrett last year? A.J. didn't disappoint this year, either, causing fireworks at the beginning and end of the weekend, both on the field and off. On Friday, during Mike...

The Chicagoist offices were abuzz on Tuesday with word of pre-sale ticket acquisitions for a reunion tour 20 years in the making, taking place at a Chicago ballpark.
