Chicagoist Podcast 7/13 - Eating Everything with Patrick Bertoletti

After a short summer vacation, the Chicagoist Podcast is back - did you miss us? In our absence, the food world saw its Superbowl event on the 4th of July, the hot-dog eatching contest at Nathans in New York. Patrick Bertoletti is a professional competitive eater and took 3rd in the event this year, but holds world records for devouring everything from pizza to PB&Js and is currently ranked #2 in the world. That's a long way from all-you-can-eat wing night.

Part of the tradition of July 4th is watching the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog eating contest and this year was no different. Not only did defending champ Joey Chestnut win again and also notch a new world record with 68 hot dogs downed, but Chicagoan Patrick "Deep Dish" Bertoletti finished third overall behind Chestnut and Kobayashi (64.5) - with 55 hot dogs put away. You may remember we caught up with Bertoletti last year at an eating contest.

  • Finally, Starbucks is starting to remind us of the restaurant that changes its menu, offers 2-for-1 deals, adds a live band, and so on and so forth, as it tries to figure out why people just aren't coming in the door. On the heals of its announcement that it would offer $1 cups of coffee with free refills, Starbucks is now saying that it will drop it's line of breakfast sandwiches (they were introduced in June, 2006). For those who can't get enough of S-buck's breakfast sandwiches, you'll be able to purchase them through fall of this year.
