Playoff Box Score: Blackhawks Fight Back, Series Returns to Chicago

Playoff Box Score: Blackhawks Fight Back, Series Returns to Chicago

We prefer a more wide open brand of hockey, but we also have to admit that since the Blackhawks decided to start hitting the Vancouver Canucks back, the momentum in their Stanley Cup playoff series has shifted. The Canucks have reverted back to the team that Daily Herald columnist Barry Rozner described as "gutless." The Hawks routed Vancouver 5-0 last night, cutting their deficit in the series to 3-2 and forcing Game 6 at the United Center Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Shred Panthers

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Shred Panthers

The Blackhawks held on to their tenuous grasp of reaching the playoffs last night with a 4-0 shutout of the Florida Panthers at the United Center. Corey Crawford earned his fourth shutout of the season with a 23-save performance as the Blackhawks stuck to a defensive-minded game plan against the Panthers. Brent Seabrook, Viktor Stalberg, Patrick Kane and Tomas Kopecky all scored to give Crawford a comfort zone to work with. The win allowed the Hawks to stay in contention for a Western Conference playoff spot. But with three points separating the teams in contention from those looking to leapfrog them, there is no margin for error. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Break Through Against Sharks

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Break Through Against Sharks

Before last night the Blackhawks were unable to break through against their former goalie Antti Niemi and the San Jose Sharks. But the offensive firepower that's been a part of the team's resurgence the past month finally got to Niemi. Marian Hossa scored twice on power plays and Patrick Kane scored the 100th goal of his career as the Blackhawks doubled up the Sharks 6-3 at the united Center. In the process, the Hawks avoided a regular season sweep by San Jose and vaulted back into fourth place in the tightly packed Western Conference. The Blackhawks next face the Dallas Stars Thursday. more ›

Patrick Kane, recovered from his bout with the flu, got a forehand shot past Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury during a shootout round to lift the Blackhawks over the Penguins 3-2. Patrick Sharp scored off a Jonathan Toews pass in the first period for his team-leading 31st goal of the season. Bryan Bickell also scored for the Hawks, who earned two crucial points in their fight to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. But their chances don't bode well if they went to a shootout round against a Penguins squad that's missing stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. more ›

A New Year, New Injuries, New Resolution: Avoid Murphy's Law

A New Year, New Injuries, New Resolution: Avoid Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law states that what can go wrong, will go wrong. The law of gravity states that what goes up must come down. Not to sound too much like Marty McFly, but it must get pretty heavy in Chicago as the Blackhawks can't seem to get out of this injury plagued funk, maintaining a healthy trend of injuries heading into 2011. more ›

Late Sports Notes: Kane Out With Knee Injury; Konerko, White Sox Still Talking

Kane Out Three Weeks: That knee injury Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane suffered during Sunday night's game against Calgary (which the NHL is inexplicably listing as a "lower body injury") will keep the All-Star out for three weeks, maybe more. Jeremy Morin has been recalled again from Rockford to fill out the roster. The good news in all this is that Marian Hossa could return as early as this weekend. more ›

Morning Box Score: Hawks Taken To Overtime By Anaheim

Morning Box Score: Hawks Taken To Overtime By Anaheim

Blackhawks 3, Ducks 2 (OT): Given their woes at home this season, the Blackhawks may be looking forward to the annual "circus trip" as a means to forge bonds between the veterans who won the Stanley Cup and the new players like Jack Skille, Fernando Pisani and Viktor Stalberg. Stalberg wound up being the hero in overtime, deflecting a Duncan Keith slapshot past Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller with 27 seconds left in overtime to give the Hawks a win on home ice. Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa each had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks. more ›

Sports Notes: Briggs Status Uncertain, Kane Status Uncertain, Quade and Sandberg Duo?, So Sayeth Ditka

Sports Notes: Briggs Status Uncertain, Kane Status Uncertain, Quade and Sandberg Duo?, So Sayeth Ditka

Briggs Status Uncertain: Lance BRigg's right ankle injury that sustained against Carolina kept him out of practice for a second straight game, leading to speculation as to if he'll play against the Seahawks Sunday. Head coach Lovie Smith said that Briggs usually heals late in the week, but didn't say if backup linebacker Brian Iwuh would start in place of Briggs. The linebacker play of Briggs, Urlacher and Pisa Tinaisamoa has been one of the main reasons the Bears have jumped to a 4-1 start. more ›

The Morning After: 'Hawks vs 'Hawks

The Morning After: 'Hawks vs 'Hawks

It was a thrilling gold medal game as Team Canada defeated Team USA in the men's ice hockey final 3-2 in overtime. The game also had a distinct Blackhawks flavor: Jonathan Toews scored the opening goal for Canada and Duncan Keith was credited with an assist on Canada's second goal, giving them a 2-0 lead. But Team USA came back as Ryan Kesler deflected in a Patrick Kane shot for USA's first goal. Kane was credited with an assist. He'd get another assist on Zach Parise's game-tying goal with less than 25 seconds left in the third period. But it would ultimately be Canada's triumph as Sidney Crosby scored the game-winner 7:40 in to the OT period. Still, Seabrook, Duncan, and Toews will return with gold medals, Kane with a silver, and all four re-teamed and focused on one ultimate goal: the Stanley Cup. The 'Hawks, who will also be rejoined by Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky who played for Team Slovokia, get back in action tomorrow night at the New York Islanders (6 p.m., CSN). more ›

Kane Named To Team USA

Kane Named To Team USA

The Blackhawks' Patrick Kane became the sixth Blackhawk named to a 2010 Olympic team yesterday when he was announced as a member of Team USA's roster. Speculation included Dustin Byfuglien as a possible team member as well, but Buff was left off the '10 roster. Said Kane, who has shaken off that off-season controversy, "All of my friends and family back home are really excited. It's a dream come true. It's the Olympics we're talking about. It's probably the highest stage of hockey you can play and highest competition level too." Besides Kane, other 'Hawks on Olympic teams include a trio - Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Jonathan Toews - for Team Canada and a pair - Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky - for Team Slovakia. more ›
