The following ten groups released albums or EPs that we believe launched them far above the roiling masses making up the Chicago music scene. While these are our favorites it should be noted that this was an amazingly strong year for the local scene, and we could have easily made a top 50 list without much of a problem. In fact, just reviewing the bands while making this list we realized how thankful we are to be located in such a musically fertile city!

Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz gave us way too much information about his apparently hot and sweaty sex life with wife Ashlee Simpson via yesterday's Howard Stern show. Some quoteable quotes:

Someone needs to put a moratorium on celebrities giving their babies idiot names. This time around, popster wife Ashlee Simpson gave birth to her son with husband Pete Wentz of Chicago's Fall Out Boy. The kid's name? Bronx Mowgli Wentz. No, we're not making this shit up. The Bronx is a borough of New York City and Mowgli is the name of the main character of The Jungle Book. According to a spokesperson, "Ashlee, Pete and baby Bronx are all healthy and happy, and thank everyone for their well wishes!" Well, that's good, because that poor kid is going to have his named mocked for the rest of his life. No word if the child was born with eyeliner already applied.

Nike is once again turning up the volume on our summer with its Nike + Human multi-city 10K race on August 31st. Twenty-five cities, from Tapei, China to Los Angeles, will host runs and activities with an eye towards charity - participants can raise money for any of the three Nike-chosen causes: The Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research, the World Wildlife Fund, and the UN's ninemillion.org program to offer aid to youth refugees.

Now that Pete Wentz has called Chicago a "global city," it is officially true. [WBBM]

  • We'll keep our eyes peeled tomorrow for new designs for the Children's Museum proposed Grant Park digs. [Crain's]

Hopefully Pete Wentz gets his rage issues in check sometime in the next nine months. Yes that’s right, a source confirmed to USmagazine.com today that he and girlfriend Ashlee Simpson will soon be welcoming a little Wentz baby into the world. Not surprisingly, Pete’s coming through on the promise ring he recently gave his lady love, since the couple is apparently engaged. A coy spokesperson for the couple had this to say:

We were chatting with a friend about the impending task of compiling "best albums" lists, and the potential of Fall Out Boy's Infinity On High making the cut. Her comment was "I don't really know much about Fall Out Boy, other than that Pete Wentz can be a douche." Our response: "Well, one has to support one's hometown douches."

As you all know, we here at Chicagoist are avid Wentz watchers. We’re also big fans of looking svelte in our dungarees, but can these two passions ever meet as one? Fear not, fellow drama and denim lovers – DKNY has the answer to all of your prayers. The New York-based icon of the jean has joined forces with Pete’s Clandestine Industries to (creatively) offer Clandestine Industries for DKNY, a snazzy line of tops, dresses,...

To background, I manage a Chicago band called Tom Schraeder & His Ego, which landed a coveted spot on the 2007 bill. Though our slot was early (12:30 p.m. on Friday), the work for artists doesn’t stop once they’ve loaded up their vans (or in our case, the hearse) and exited the festival grounds. To give our esteemed Chicagoist readers a quick sketch of life deep on the Lollapalooza undercard, I kept a scribbled-note journal...

We've already shared our thoughts with you about Fall Out Boy's new album. And, wise, prescient sages we are, we were correct in predicting the group's latest effort would be a monster sales-wise. So it's no surprise that the group has had to upgrade to a larger venue when they visit Chicago on June 10 and 11 at the Charter One Pavilion for The Honda Civic Tour.

We like the wacky antics of Jeremy Piven. And, we also like the comfy basics of the Gap. Together? We like them not so much. Piven, along with Common, is one of the new faces of the Gap’s T-shirt campaign. The ads also feature Mia Farrow, Natasha Bedingfield, Pete Wentz and other semi-famed types. Common gets smoldering down pretty well. No complaints there. But, Piven looks like he’s about to molest us. We’re sorry, but...

When Chicagoist thinks of the bands that make define our local music scene, we usually think of The M’s, The Ponys, Healthy White Baby, Lying In States, Detholz!, and Chin Up Chin Up, (and Suffrajett, of course). But when you’re looking at something from close-up, you forget that it often looks different from far away. So if you page through Blender's 5th Anniversary issue this month, you’ll see a much different crowd representing Chicago.

How does a band know when they've made it? Is it the large house? Five cars? Nah, it's when someone yells, "Sell Out!" We have two cases of that syndrome brewing right here in the Windy City. Fall Out Boy have responded to criticism that they watered down their sound in order to get that coveted TRL spot with a big FU. Bassist Pete Wentz puts it eloquently: "I didn't decide that I wanted to...
