New CTA Stop Coming To West Loop

The CTA has firmed up construction information regarding the long-awaited West Loop CTA stop that's going in at Lake & Morgan as part of the Green and Pink lines. The total cost for the station is between $35 and $40 million with at least $8 million coming from federal funding and the rest from TIFs. The CTA is aiming to begin construction on the new stop later this year with the station opening in 2011. The new station will be located between the Ashland and Clinton stops which are separated by more than a mile. We're curious to see if Oprah will ride the train to her Harpo, Inc. studios.

CTA Schedules Sunday Re-Routes

If you plan on using the CTA tomorrow, be sure you're aware of some re-routes happening.

Take a walk down 18th Street in Pilsen and you won’t go far without passing a carnitas shop, pizza joint, hot dog stand or Mexican grill. It’s a varied mix of cheap (read: affordable) and cheap (read: not very good). For tablecloth dining options in the neighborhood, diners are often limited to May Street Café or Picante Grill, two places both given the Chicagoist review treatment. The former closes down when convenient (e.g the previous...

Ever since Frank Kruesi got kicked to the curb back in April, we’ve been nothing short of elated. We looked forward to a new reign of … whatever the opposite of ineptitude is. (Eptitude?) With time comes sobriety, as the usual problems have started cropping up once more. Two trains shutting down in one week? Bad form. Honestly, though, we weren’t expecting that kind of mechanical stuff to be cleared up overnight, especially when the...

If you are near a window of some type, then this isn't news to you; it's disgusting outside. Cold, snowy, windy — all the trademarks of our beloved Chicago winters. And not surprisingly, commutes of all types are screwed up. While there are many reasons to dump on the CTA, we hold the Pink Line above almost all others as evidence of why things need to change. Maybe the fact that it derailed this...

The CTA put out their 2006 ridership figures on Monday, showing a 0.5 percent increase from last year, and boosting figures to their highest level since 1993, according to CTA officials. Several things in this report were unexpected to us. First, that buses account for two-thirds of total CTA ridership. We would have never guessed, frankly. A lot of buses don’t run 24 hours, and after rush hour a lot of buses don’t seem...

Yesterday the original Belmont El station was closed, and a temporary entrance was opened 75 feet to the east, similar to the relocation of the Fullerton stop. The temporary entrance will be in use for the next two years, during construction of a new accessible station with improved lighting, turnstiles and platforms. The old station will be preserved and relocated across the street. Transit superfan Tony Coppoletta’s Flickr stream notes that the station initially “opened as a local and express stop on the Northwestern 'L's initial line from downtown to Wilson.”

We woke up this morning to news that the CTA’s Orange Line train is running in the opposite direction around the Loop, which strikes us as so ridiculous that we’ve decided to finish the rest of this post in limerick form. The Orange line is all loosey-goosey Or so says its Prez Frank Kruesi A defective switch Has caused the glitch Screwing rush hour for all that you see After Roosevelt, toward Adams you’ll travel...

What a week! We finally got through all of our photos from the Soul of Chicago Express tour that Tony Coppoletta magnificently hosted last Sunday. The tour started out up at the Wilson Red Line station and went all the way down to the Green Line Ashland/63. At each of these stops Tony talked to us about the history of the station. We then went to the Quincy Loop stop and the Kedzie Blue/Pink Line Station. The tour was extremely well planned and thought out. We have to applaud Tony for getting everything right on his first try! We were part of the sold-out private tour and we also provided snacks for everyone. If you missed the fun, don't worry. Tony says he'll be hosting another tour, probably in the spring or summer. For now, check out our photos on Flickr and everyone else's 370+ photos there too.

After all the drama last night, the morning commute is not looking good. We recommend looking for alternate routes, if possible. Even though the Blue line will be running, it will be at reduced levels and we're sure that it will be busy and there will be a lot of waiting. Maybe we're being pessamistic, but that's just us. We're also assuming the #56 bus will be crammed. Another alternate route is to take a Pink Line/Ashland bus combo. Here are the Blue Line details from the CTA site:

To paraphrase the advertising slogan of a certain local periodical, if you didn’t know the CTA made some major changes to its service today, it’s not their fault.

Laski was sentenced to 2 years for the bribes he took in the hired truck scandal. A woman was in Chicago Police lockup, charged with drug possession. She asked 6 times for medical attention and was ignored. Later on she was found dead in her cell. Daley plans to spend hundreds of millions to build about 15 new schools, proving he really does think education is the top priority. Those bomb-sniffing dogs that patrol...

The CTA has apparently gave up trying to be a viable agency altogether, begging off on making a decision and putting a significant choice in the capable hands of schoolchildren. The result proved once again that there's always something so funny in the world that you couldn't have written it if you tried: The newest CTA branch of the L will officially be called the Pink Line. Unofficially, it will be called crude names ......
