Day 3 of the 2009 Pitchfork Music Fest featured a full slate of bands we planned on catching and we managed to catch most of it with all roads leading to the big headlining set by The Flaming Lips, whose lighting rig was already set up on stage. We were welcomed into a warm, sunny Union Park by the spazzy, buzzy electro-rock of The Mae Shi who set the energy level to 11 and didn't relent for the duration of their set which included a brief switch to hip-hop courtesy of Yea Big + Kid Static. The highlight of the band's performance didn't come from the band itself but rather those guests who called on Pitchfork to review their new record, saying, "Give it a 4, I don't give a shit."

With just the tip of the lineup iceberg announced, we're already pretty pumped for this year's Pitchfork Music Festival. Rest assured we'll be sweating it out this year at Union Park (July 17th through the 19th) just like we do every year. Lucky for us, this Friday the 13th brings us the start of ticket sales for the fest. And while Lolla's allotment of $60 tix sold out lickety-split, Pitchfork's tickets are always on the cheap anyway, making it a solid deal.

With the Pitchfork Music Fest a little under three weeks away, the fest has released its official schedule. And, frankly, we're pretty psyched for Saturday's Hold Steady-Animal Collective pairing and Sunday's Spiritualized-Spoon pairing. Nice work, kids.

EOYW is a day late this week, and your forgiveness is begged. Luckily, most of the shows below are not yet sold out, so our laziness will not be to your detriment. For whatever reason, some of the most talented musicians don’t become well-known until after they contract some life-threatening disease that warrants a tribute album. Alejandro Escovedo managed to recover from his bout with Hepatitis C to release The Boxing Mirror earlier this year....

At this year’s Pitchfork Music Fest, Band of Horses confessed to feeling mighty jet-lagged, and it showed. Hopefully, they’ll be more energized at Metro tonight, and you won’t have to worry about getting elbowed by a hippie-with-no-rhythm like at their previous sold-out Schuba’s shows. Tuesday, Metro, 9 p.m., $16, 18+. This week’s award for Best Band Name goes to local band Let’s Get Out of This Terrible Sandwich Shop. That wouldn’t be enough to recommend...
