Chicago: A coyote kind of town

Chicago: A coyote kind of town

We had to chuckle at the breathless coverage of yesterday’s rescue operation in which a Chicago Fire Department boat was dispatched with city Animal Control staffers to save “Holly,” a coyote stuck floating on a tiny ice flow in Belmont Harbor. The story so captured the attention of this town’s media that, for once, Rahm Emanuel almost disappeared from the headlines for the day…almost. But as funny as the story must look to media watchers---it must be an astounding cultural disconnect for folks in the Rocky Mountains, where coyotes are considered problematic varmints and your tax dollars go to poison, trap, or shoot almost 100,000 of them annually. more ›

Patrick Kane played the hero last night as he netted a last-minute goal that propelled the 'Hawks past the Nashville Predators 5-4 in their final meeting of the regular season. The goal capped off an incredible third period that saw the teams combine for six goals. Nashville got an early lead in the opening minutes before Kane answered with a goal a few minutes later to tie the game up at 1-1. The Predators got a second period goal to take a 2-1 lead into the final period when all Hell broke loose. John Madden scored the next two goals, about six minutes apart, to put the 'Hawks up 3-2 and a minute after his second goal, Brian Campbell scored on a power play to give the 'Hawks a two-goal lead. But the Predators got back into the game, scoring the next two goals. Kane, though, came through scoring amongst a flurry of shots in front of the Nashville goal in the final minute (video below). Antti Niemi recorded 16 saves overall in the game and earned the win. And yes, that wasn't a typo earlier: even though we're not even halfway through the season, the Predators and 'Hawks - division foes - will not meet again for the rest of the 2009-2010 season. Nice move, schedule-makers. For the record, the 'Hawks took the season series 4-2. The 'Hawks are back on the road for a game in Dallas on Tuesday (7 p.m., VS). more ›

Morning Box Score: 'Hawks Continue Hot Start

Morning Box Score: 'Hawks Continue Hot Start

Hot damn, the Blackhawks are on a roll to start the 2009-2010 season. The team is now 5-1-1, their best start in 27 years, after rolling past Nashville 3-1 last night. After a scoreless first period that saw the 'Hawks take 12 shots, Chicago wasted no time getting on the board in the second, scoring two goals less than thirty seconds apart in the opening minutes of the period. Dustin Byfuglien netted a power play goal 2:21 into the period and Tomas Kopecky added a goal at 2:49 in to give the 'Hawks a 2-0 edge. The Predators answered quickly themselves as just 47 seconds later Martin Erat got one past Cristobal Huet to cut the lead to 2-1. The Predators, though, wouldn't get many more chances at scoring. Duncan Keith added a goal in the third to extend the lead and Nashville only got off two shots in the final period. Overall, Huet stopped 12 of 13 shots while the Blackhawks managed to take 30 overall. Brent Seabrook had two assists: on the Byfuglien and Keith goals. If you haven't gotten a chance to see the 'Hawks in action, now's the time. Beginning Saturday (versus Dallas, 7:30 p.m., WGN), five of the next six 'Hawks game - taking us through the end of October - are at home. more ›

Morning Box Score: Blackhawks Lose Home Opener in Shoot-Out

Back at home, in the friendly confines of the United Center, and still the Blackhawks couldn't get one in the win column, though they did earn a point in losing 3-2 to the Nashville Predators in a shoot-out. Martin Havlat got the 'Hawks an early lead with a power play goal at 6:14, but Nashville got two goals of their own past goalie Cristobal Huet for a 2-1 lead. Patrick Sharp tied things up for the 'Hawks in the opening moments of the second period, but then both teams went scoreless through the rest of the second period, the entire third period, and overtime. In the shoot-out, Patrick Kane and Havlat were both stopped by Nashville goalie Dan Ellis while the first two Nashville shooters scored to earn the win. Said Havlat of the 'Hawks 0-2-1 start to the season, “I think the previous two games we had more chances than tonight. It’s not the offense that’s costing us the game. Our overall defensive game - the whole team, not just the defense - that’s what’s costing us games.” more ›

Savard Looking to Make History

Denis Savard can make Blackhawks history with a victory at Minnesota on Tuesday night. On Saturday night when the Blackhawks came from behind to defeat the Nashville Predators 4-3 in OT, Denis Savard became only the second Blackhawks coach to win his first three games as head coach, the first being Sid Abel (1952-53 season). No Blackhawks coach has ever won their first four games as coach of the team. Prior to Savard's promotion the... more ›

Stanley Cup Fever

Stanley Cup Fever

Chicagoist is not advocating the mass quantity purchase of aluminum foil to build your own Stanley Cup just yet. We are, however, encouraged to see the Blackhawks start their regular season off on a positive note, building on a successful pre-season by winning their season opener against a tough Nashville Predator team. ESPN calls the Predators "The Thinking Man's pick" to represent the Western Conference in this year's Stanley Cup. more ›

Blackhawks Return to the Ice

The Chicago Blackhawks return to the United Center ice on Wednesday night versus the Nashville Predators. The National Hockey League took a break so many players could represent their countries in the Winter Olympics.
