Mayor Daley's New Yorker Close-Up

The New Yorker has given Mayor Daley a nice close-up as former Tribune staffer Evan Osnos profiles our city leader. One caveat: it's behind a subscriber paywall so you'll have to pick up a copy if you're not a New Yorker subscriber. The office copy of the issue is slowly making the rounds but from what we've heard from those who have read it is that it's a compelling (if expansive) read, clocking in at 13 pages. more ›

Mister Preteen Word Power

Area man delivers dictionaries to third graders. On the surface, it may seem like a fuzzy-lensed feel good story, but it's actually pretty cool. In this morning's Tribune, Diane Rado profiles Theodore Utchen, a.k.a. "Dictionary Man," a name earned as he's donated 10,000 dictionaries to 3rd graders in Wheaton and Glen Ellyn school districts over the last six years. Said Utchen, "I feel if we can get kids started early in life with improved communication skills, this will make life more meaningful for them.
