The jibarito is a cross-cultural gem with a very American story. It was invented in Chicago (circa 1993) at Humboldt Park’s Borinquen Restaurant, a tricked-out plantain sandwich inspired by Puerto Rican culture and named after its peasant class, then embraced across strata at local Cuban, Mexican, and South American joints.

A request for a street named in honor of Chicago author Saul Bellow was denied due to controversial remarks and writing by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Bellow's University of Chicago colleague and friend, Richard Stern, made the request to Ald. Toni Preckwinkle. Stern told the Chicago Tribune that Preckwinkle sent him a letter saying she had heard Bellow made racist comments and so would not endorse a memorial to him. Raised in Humboldt Park from...

Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network." It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by...

Chicagoist is going to be completely honest here: Though we like to think of ourselves as food connoisseurs, there are still cuisines out there we haven't tried. And so, with the new year, we decided to tackle one of the missing ones, and we headed out for some Puerto Rican food.

Ask the average Chicagoan about the riots of the late 1960s, and he or she will probably nod their head and say “During the Democratic National Convention, right?” While the 1968 riots maintain a prominent (read: notorious) place in this city’s history, this week marks a series of riots that were a flashpoint for the frustrations of Puerto Ricans in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. On June 12th, 1966, 20-year-old Aracelis Cruz was shot by police...

Chicagoist had walked past Rudy's Taste on Ashland Avenue many times but had never gone in. Once, more than a year ago, we even grabbed a menu, thinking it looked like an interesting restaurant and that we should try it some day, but we never did. Not even after it was featured in Time Out Chicago's "Save This Restaurant" call out, meant to get people to go to restaurants that are good but in danger of closing. We thought, "Oh yeah, we should try that place." Finally, this weekend we were trying to think of somewhere to go for lunch and decided to give it a try.

El Pollo Loco just opened a restaurant in Logan Square, its first location outside of the US Southwest. Like many others, Chicagoist was there PRONTO to check it out. We'd had El Pollo Loco in California and were eager to see if it lived up to our memories. We were also excited to have a flame grilled fast food chicken alternative to KFC and a Mexican alternative to Taco Bell. El Pollo Loco promised to...

Chicagoist headed down to the Taste of Chicago against our own advice to witness the incredible show that Santana puts on. Luckily our adopted Mexican/Puerto Rican adopted family arrived at 10 am to snag a spot near the Petrillo Band Shell so that we had somewhere to call home in the estimated crowd of 300,000 on Saturday evening.

If you thought there was a lot to do last weekend, you ain't seen nothin' yet, baby. This weekend if you can't find something to do you just aren't livin in the city the way you should. Deep breath, ok here goes:

This Friday the Inter-American Magnet School is hosting their first annual spring benefit, Noche Cultural, from 6pm - 8:30pm.

The College Board released its report today on national and statewide trends in SAT scores. The national average is the same as last year: 1026. Verbal scores are up one point to 508 and math scores are down one point to 518. Illinoiss average, though reported here as being the same, actually appears to be 1182, with 585 on verbal and 597 on math. You can read the whole Illinois report in this .pdf, or trust us that thats whats on page 12. Actually, the report is pretty interesting and worth flipping throughthe information is broken down in lots of different ways, and its kind of cool. Nerd alert.
