The Morning After: Sox Close In, Cubs Blow

The Morning After: Sox Close In, Cubs Blow

The Sox' comeback summer continues as after yesterday's 5-3 (comeback) victory over the Rangers, they now sit just a game back of Detroit and Minnesota who are tied atop the AL Central. The Sox struck first last night on a Mark Kotsay double in the second but still found themselves down 3-2 after five innings. In the top of the sixth, Carlos Quentin doubled in the tying run and, with two outs in the inning, Alexei Ramirez broke the tie with a two-run shot, putting the Sox on top for good. Mark Buehrle gave up all three runs but pitched seven innings for the win, his seventh on the year. J.J. Putz and (newly-anointed All-Star) Matt Thornton combined for two innings of scoreless relief to secure the win. After the game, Ramirez said, "We are very excited to be where we are." That seems to be an understatement. The Sox are now back at home where they'll open a three-game series against the Angels tonight (6:05 p.m., CSN+). more ›

The Morning After: Sox Rally Past Rangers

The Morning After: Sox Rally Past Rangers

The Sox had better luck yesterday than their North Side counterparts as they rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Texas Rangers in the opener of their weekend series. Down 3-1 heading into the seventh inning, Alex Rios and Paul Konerko both knocked in runs to tie the game at 3-3. And in the top of the ninth, Mark Kotsay smacked a two-out, two-run double put the Sox ahead for good. Freddy Garcia gave up all three Ranger runs in six innings of work, getting a no decision; J.J. Putz got the win in relief and Matt Thornton picked up the save. It was a clutch win for the Sox as it kept them from falling further into a post-win-streak slump and it also came against a team almost as hot as they've been in the Rangers (16 wins in their last 20 games). Ozzie was upbeat after the game, saying, "We take advantage when we have people on base. That's the way we are going to have to play. We also had clutch hitting. That's what we were missing in Kansas City." The Sox currently remain two games back of division-leading Minnesota and one-game back of second-place Detroit in the AL Central. The Sox hope to make up a little more ground tonight when John Danks get the start (7:05 p.m., WGN). more ›

The Morning After: Sox Power Past Rangers

The Morning After: Sox Power Past Rangers

The Sox used the long ball to score all the runs they needed to edge the Rangers 4-3, avoiding a sweep in the series finale. Andruw Jones smacked a solo homer in the second to put the Sox up 1-0 but the Rangers would score three runs - one in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings - off of starter Freddy Garcia to take the 3-1 lead. An Alex Rios homer in the bottom of the sixth would cut the lead to 3-2, but it was Carlos Quentin who would play the hero. Quentin, who made an error in the fourth inning which led to the first Rangers run, belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to put the Sox up for good. Garcia went seven innings and earned the win while Matt Thornton held in the eighth and Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless ninth for the save. Ozzie was happy with the pitching staff performance, saying, "I think if we take the lead and we've got the right guys out of the bullpen doing it ... six, seven innings for the White Sox starters [is great for us], because I know the bullpen is going to be pretty good if we do that." The Sox are now 23-30 on the year, 7.5 games back of division-leading Minnesota. The homestand at The Cell continues tonight when the Sox welcome the rival Cleveland Indians to town (7:10 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Morning After: Blackhawks Take Commanding Lead

The Chicago Blackhawks now have a commanding 3-0 lead over the San Jose Sharks in their Western Conference finals series after coming away with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory last night at the United Center. After a scoreless first period, the Sharks drew first blood on a power play goal early in the second period. But just moments later, Patrick Sharp answered with a power play goal of his own to tie the game up at 1-1. The game was tied 1-1 going into the second half of the third period when Dave Bolland put the 'Hawks up 2-1, scoring on a break-away. But San Jose would answer minutes later, tying the game at 2-2, which is how the game was when the clock hit zero, sending it to overtime. And at the 12:24 mark of overtime, Dustin Byfuglien netted the dramatic game-winner. more ›

Morning Box Score

We've lost count of the number of overtime games the 'Hawks have already played this year but at least this one came out another winner as Dustin Byfuglien scored in overtime to give the 'Hawks a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers. The Rangers got on the board first halfway through the first period and the score remained 1-0 until Jonathan Toews netted a power play goal late in the third to tie the game up and force overtime. The 'Hawks got off an impressive 41 shots on goal, even more astonishing given New York only had 18; Huet had 17 saves in the winning effort. The 'Hawks travel to Buffalo for tomorrow night's game (6:30 p.m., CSN). more ›

Derrek Lee Joins Cubs Fight Club

Derrek Lee Joins Cubs Fight Club

The fireworks continued to fly this past weekend at the again-not-so-Friendly Confines. Derrek Lee became the latest member of the Cubs to throw a punch, when he went after San Diego Padres pitcher Chris Young in the fourth inning after being plunked on the hand by a pitch. The altercation led to a bench-clearing brawl. In addition to Young and Lee, Padres pitcher Jake Peavy and Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry were also tossed from... more ›

Sox Extend Vasquez's Contract

Sox Extend Vasquez's Contract

Chicagoist is becoming increasingly concerned about Sox GM Kenny Williams and his mental state. Has he been overworked the past few years? Does he need a break? Is he trying to get himself fired? Does he covet some scouting job with the New York Mets? Otherwise, we're at a loss to explain his handling of the White Sox starting rotation since the end of last season. In early December, he traded Freddy Garcia, a workhorse... more ›

Circle of Life

Circle of Life

Chicagoist can't get that damn story out of our head now, but "Circle of Life" was the first thing that we thought when we heard that former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa is about to sign a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers in hopes of returning to "the show." more ›

Those Guys Bring on the Goofy

Those Guys Bring on the Goofy

It's easy to watch a lot of crappy comedy on TV. "The Daily Show" is always reliable for some laughs, and "30 Rock" and SNL have their moments. But by and large contemporary TV comedy is a wasteland of retreads, anemia and laughless vulgarity. We're becoming increasingly convinced that the future of television isn't television at all. It's the internet. Because there's plenty of really funny stuff online, and most of it is even free. more ›

All Star Game Recap

All Star Game Recap

Should the White Sox again find themselves in the World Series this October -- and why shouldn't they? -- they now know they'll have home field advantage, on account of the American League's 3-2 victory in last night's All Star Game. It didn't look quite so promising for a while, however. more ›

Pacifist Pitcher Sent Packing

Pacifist Pitcher Sent Packing

Chicagoist is as old school as anyone when it comes to baseball. We like the Wrigley Field scoreboard manual, don't eat any ballpark entree that doesn't belong to the hot dog family, and we miss the days when players wore stirrups. But we've never been a fan of the often childish "unwritten rules" that baseball players and teams follow. more ›

Yesterday, it was the White Sox House

Yesterday, it was the White Sox House

The White Sox made their White House visit yesterday, where President Bush congratulated the team on their World Series title. As expected, manager Ozzie Guillen was a no-show because he was vacationing with his family. He noted to reporters, "A lot of managers push their players toward baseball and not enough toward family. Baseball isn't going to be around forever, but family will be." He mentioned how throughout the season, he allowed players away from... more ›

Will World Series Wedding Rings be Available in the Giftshop?

A few months ago, we questioned some of the "fantasy experiences" that the White Sox offer, particularly the option to get married at the park. We know it might sound like an awesome idea to some guys... but we are pretty damn sure that there are no brides-to-be who would feel the same way. more ›

Konerko Sweepstakes Begin

Konerko Sweepstakes Begin

Friday marked the opening of free agency for Major League Baseball. Coming off a 40 Homer, 100 RBI regular season and a huge post-season capped by the White Sox World Series Championship, Paul Konerko is one of the hottest commodities on the market. As soon as the ball hit his mitt for the final out, questions came about whether the Sox could retain their offensive star. While Konerko personified the no-ego, play-hard type of player... more ›
