Despite data and arguments to the contrary, state and local officials have repeatedly insisted that red light cameras are a measure to increase driver safety, not revenue. If that's the case, one Illinois Senator wants them to put their money where their mouth is, so to speak, and eliminate cameras that catch what he says are non-dangerous infractions, rolling right turns on red.

Red Light Camera Blues? There's an App for That®
We know red light cameras are a money making machine. We also know there’s an app for almost anything. The two ideas have now combined forces to empower citizens and prevent tickets. Cobra has created a RLC and radar detector that’s compatible with its free iPhone app. Cobra iRadar alerts users of upcoming RLC spots and radar. Users can log alert history with a plethora of control options. The detector is sold at most electronic stores ranging from $149-170.
Stop the Red Light Cameras
Taxes and tickets are the only ways the government knows how to generate revenue. Their new favorite ploy on citizens is the red light camera. The Campaign for Liberty is mad as hell and is not going to take it anymore. Via The Expired Meter comes word they’ve organized a protest this Sunday in Oak Lawn from 11a.m.-1:30p.m. at the intersection of 95th St. and Cicero Ave.
Crashes Up At Red Light Camera Intersections?
So how safe red light cameras anyway? For a while, it's been suggested that they actually make intersections more dangerous. Now, professor Rajiv Shah, an adjunct at UIC, has released a study showing that while traffic accidents across the city are down over the past few years, accidents at the city's 39 red light intersections increased by six percent from 2006 to 2007. Of course - grain of salt - those numbers are now several years old. Not surprisingly, the City of Chicago, which made over $60 million from red light camera tickets in 2009, takes umbrage with Shah's research.
