Morning Box Score: Hawks Drop North American Opener

Missed opportunities and a stellar performance by Chris Osgood spoiled the Blackhawks' return to our fair continent, losing their first game in regulation of the season to the Red Wings in Detroit, 3-2. It wasn't for lack of trying. Continuing the season's trend, the Hawks once again outshot their opponent (34-23). Their aggressiveness led to a 1-0 lead early in the second period, as the Wings turned the puck over trying to clear their zone, and Kris Versteeg passed to Patrick Sharp, who was just hanging out, whispering sweet nothings into Osgood's ear. The Hawks' previously perfect penalty kill faltered midway through the second as Niklas Lindstrom's shot deflected off John Madden's skate and past Cristobal Huet (0-1-1). With less than five minutes to go in the period, the Red Wings added a goal by Kris Draper and then a power play goal by Johan Franzen just over ninety seconds later. Versteeg cut it to 3-2 with a power play goal halfway through the third, but it wasn't enough to overcome Osgood's dominance, a disorganized five-on-three opportunity in which the Hawks managed just one shot, and shuffled lines and new faces due to their spate of injuries (latest news: Ben Eager was put on injured reserve prior to the game). The Hawks (1-1-1) make their United Center season debut this Saturday as they take on the Colorado Avalanche (2-1-0).

Morning Box Score: Wings Whip 'Hawks

Things got ugly yesterday as the Red Wings and even with Martin Havlat back in the lineup after the nasty hit he received in Game Three Friday night, the Blackhawks looked terrible as the Wings whipped the young 'Hawks 6-1 to take a 3-1 series lead. Things began looking bleak right away when Marian Hossa scored a short-handed goal for the Red Wings in the first; Detroit would add two more - including one off a power play following a controversial penalty on Matt Walker at the end of the first period - before the 'Hawks got on the board, courtesy of a Toews power play goal. But just four minutes later - less than halfway through the second period - the Wings had added two more goals to put the lead at 5-1. One more goal in the third period gave the Wings the final 6-1 tally. With the Bulin Wall still sidelined with an injury, Cristobal Huet got the start in goal, but didn't fair well, giving up five goals while stopping 21 shots; Corey Crawford even saw action, stopping 6 of 7 shots he faced. The scary part? The Wings did this without either Nicklas Lidstrom or Pavel Datsyuk, both of whom sat out with injuries. For the series (so far), the Wings have outscored the 'Hawks by a total of 17-9. Game Five is Wednesday night in Detroit.

Good Lord it has been far too long since the Chicagoist office has been buzzing with this much excitement over the 'Hawks in mid-May. It all starts today at 2 p.m. as the Blackhawks and Red Wings finally start their tussle for a shot at the Stanley Cup. The Blackhawks have been off for much longer than the Wings so here's hoping they don't have to shake off rust because they won't have the time. The Red Wings won the season series 4-2, but the first two losses were shoot out losses and the Blackhawks finished out the season with back-to-back wins. It may not be much, but it may be enough to give the young 'Hawks some confidence. Let us know in the comments how you think the series will go and be sure to follow us on Twitter where Benjy will be tweeting and discussing the game with readers.

'Hawks-Wings All Set

With last night's Detroit victory over the Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks, the stage is set for one hell of a Western Conference Finals series. It's the Blackhawks versus Red Wings for a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals and damn, we're excited. Here's how the schedule shakes out:

Morning Box Score

The Chicago Blackhawks concluded the regular season with 3-0 shutout victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. 'Hawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin was in top form, denying all 37 shot attempts by Detroit. Andrew Ladd and Jonathan Toews both scored in the first period to provide early offense for Chicago, and Dave Bolland added a power-play goal in the third to make the the Blackhawks' lead insurmountable. Chicago finishes the season with 104 points, good for sixth best in the league, and will be hosting the Calgary Flames in the first round of the playoffs. The Blackhawks won all four contests versus the Flames in the regular season and will look to continue their dominance when the puck drops at 7:30 on Thursday.

Blackhawks To Open Next Season In Finland

The NHL announced today that the Chicago Blackhawks would be one of four teams opening the 2009-2010 season in Europe as part of a special series. The 'Hawks will head to Helsinki, Finland to take on the Florida Panthers in a two-game "home and home" series while the Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues will tangle in a pair of games in Stockholm, Sweden. Not so coincidentally: Finland and Sweden are the top two countries in terms of non-North American visitors to the NHL's website. While the Panthers have never played a game outside of North America in their existence, the 'Hawks have skated on the other side of the pond before. In September 1992, the Blackhawks and the Montreal Canadiens faced off in a pair of exhibition games at London's Wembley Arena. It will be the third straight year the NHL has opened a season overseas.

Blackhawks Earn Big Ratings, All-Star Trio

A few days after this year's Winter Classic, and the ratings are in. The prognosis? Good. Very good. Better than last year, in fact. It earned the NHL's best overnight ratings in 13 years and increased 12 percent over last year's game.

This year's outdoor game between the Blackhawks and Red Wings earned a 2.9 overnight rating and a 6 share. Each overnight ratings point equals about 735,000 TV homes. Last year's game featuring the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres had a 2.6 overnight rating and 5 share...In Chicago, Thursday's game drew a national high of an 11.8 rating and 21 share, with Detroit second at 10.5 and 21.
Though the 'Hawks ultimately dropped the game (and every other game to the Wings this year), they remain the up-and-coming team of the league this season and have been rewarded, sending three players to next month's All-Star game in Montreal. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were the top two Western Conference vote-getters, with 917,551 and 809,599 votes, respectively. Defenseman Brian Campbell is the third 'Hawk to get an All-Star nod.

Winter Classic Arrives

After months of anticipation and a little criticism, today's 2009 NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and the rival Detroit Red Wings is finally here. The puck drops at high noon and the game will be shown on NBC 5. The teams met on Tuesday with the Red Wings getting the better of the 'Hawks. It was the 'Hawks first loss since losing to the Red Wings on December 6, ending their nine-game win streak.

Winter Classic Still Looking Good

With all the crazy weather we've had, it seems there was room for a little concern about Thursday's NHL Winter Classic between the Blackhawks and Red Wings at Wrigley Field. But officials insist there's nothing to worry about. According to Dan Craig, the NHL's facilities/operations manager, "Everything is on schedule from our side, and we're ready to go." As to whether or not last weekend's warmth would affect the ice, Craig said, "The wind is more of an issue than the heat," pointing out that most arenas have air temps in the 60s. The ice was painted yesterday and the crew is putting the finishing touches on the set-up. And the weather forecast for Thursday? Cloudy with highs near 30 and a chance of flurries.

In a game that surely gave Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley fits, the Blackhawks overcame an early two-goal deficit and then gave up a two-goal lead of their own en route to a 5-4 shootout loss to rival Detroit. Less than five minutes in, the Red Wings were up 2-0 but the 'Hawks stormed back for three goals to finish the period, including two from Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks then scored the only goal of the second period to take a 4-2 lead but watched it slip away as the Red Wings scored a pair of goals in the third to push the game to overtime. Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk scored the only goal in the shootout to clinch the victory for Detroit. Defenseman Brent Seabrook said afterward, "It's frustrating. We need to shore that up. We need to be better with the puck."

Brilliant marketing decision by the NHL to use an actual recording of Harry Caray singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in this commercial. It's getting us pumped for the match-up. [via Awful Announcing]

If Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) gets his wish, Wrigley Field rooftop owners will be allowed to sell tickets to the upcoming Winter Classic between the Blackhawks and rival Detroit Red Wings. While the rooftops are limited to only being open for Cubs' home games, Tunney has introduced an ordinance that would allow the rooftops to be open for the game, saying, "It's a fierce rivalry. Interest is very high and ticket prices are very high. There's an opportunity for the rooftops to do some business. For the concerts [by Jimmy Buffett and the Police], the rooftops were not that good a seat. We let them be open, but they didn't benefit financially. This time, the rooftops will have a saleable seat. Center ice is around second base." We think it's a grand idea that makes sense. And at least those rooftop clubs have indoor areas where you can actually warm up. With ticket prices for the game ranging from $75 to $325, it'll be interesting to see what prices owners put on packages. One owner, Tom Gramatis, has lowered his price to $200 per person thanks to the economy.

Ticket information for the 2009 NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field on New Years Day has been sent to season ticket holders. There are three tiers of ticket prices: $75, $225, and $325. The NHL expects to sell around 41,000 tickets. Information for non-season ticket holders will be announced no later than Monday. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said:

This game is going to be sold out. Most of the tickets, not all, will be going to season ticket-holders of the Blackhawks. They are our first priority and the Blackhawks' first priority. We're not going to have the massive public sale like you did when we were playing in a 72,000-seat facility. Some tickets will be made available to the public but if you want to be assured, you have to get season tickets...I think it was an absolute highlight last year [in Buffalo] and we're expecting it to be terrific again being in an iconic venue like Wrigley Field. It has the history and tradition.
Both teams will also be wearing special throwback jerseys for the event.

We'll get to the All-Star lineups in a moment. First, who's stoked at the thought of hockey outside on New Years Day? The Tribune reports that the Black Hawks and Red Wings will face off at Wrigley Field in the follow-up to this year's amazing Penguins-Sabres matchup in Buffalo. It's yet another coup for the Hawks as they quickly climb back to respectability. Club President John McDonough lobbied NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for the game almost from the moment he signed on with the Hawks.

For the first time in a long while, Chicago is seeing success from both the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) and the Chicago Wolves (AHL). The Wolves are off to a 13-1-1 start, giving them the best winning percentage in the league--which should come as no surprise to their faithful fans. On the other hand, it is a surprise that after a quarter of the season, the Blackhawks aren't breaking their fans' hearts. The Hawks have skated...

The Chicago Blackhawks have released a schedule for home televised games for the 2007-2008 season that includes seven dates starting with Sunday's 6pm game against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Blackhawks are three games into their 2007-2008 NHL Campaign, and so far it looks like it could be another tough year for hockey fans here in Chicago. They've yet to find a way to sound the horn on power plays--hell, they've have had trouble scoring at all, with just four goals in three games, none while having the man advantage. No surprise though as the Hawks have been the worst in the NHL on...

Peter Bondra saw his first minutes with the Blackhawks and helped propel them to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Bondra, a sixteen-year veteran of the NHL, signed with the Blackhawks on Sunday and was suited up for Tuesday night's game. Chicagoist was excited to see his contract was based on performance. Bondra earns $500,000 for showing up but can earn an additional $1 million in performance-based incentives if he produces for the...
