Stroger on Taxcut: Not Too Happy

Greg Hinz is reporting on his blog that Cook County Board President Todd Stroger issued a scathing statement late Tuesday, threatening "thousands" of health care and public safety layoffs as a result of the tax cut county board commissioners voted for earlier in the day. The statement also featured an amusing typo that seemed almost appropriate.

County Sales Tax Repealed, Toddler Pissed

It's a good day if you're tired of higher taxes. WBEZ reports the Cook County Commission has just voted 12-3 to repeal last year's one percentage point sales tax increase. The three votes against the appeal came from William Beavers, Robert Steele and Jerry Butler. Even more eye-opening is Tony Peraica's Twitter feed which featured the following tweets from the Commission's meeting:

This week you're going to see articles online and in print noting the 75th anniversary of the repeal of the Volstead Act, which will be celebrated throughout the city on Friday. Prohibition didn't stop people from drinking, particularly in "the city that works." Places like the Green Mill actually thrived during Prohibition (we'll be writing about Green Mill and its Prohibition-era history later this week).

You'd think that, writing for a large blog, we'd be able to keep up with RSS feeds and tips. So how the Chicago chapter of the Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails went past our head is beyond us. Should've known that Sonja Kassebaum of North Shore Distillery was the mastermind behind this. Currently, LUPEC Chicago has nine members, including Master Mixologist Bridget Albert of Southern Wine and Spirits of Illinois.

  • Another brewery set to open soon is Crown Brewing in Crown Point, Indiana. The brewmaster behind this endeavor is Jim Cibak, who earned his brewing stripes at Goose Island and Three Floyds. Most recently Cibak was working wonders at Firestone Walker Brewing in California, where he was experimenting extensively in barrel-aged fermentation and blended ale selections. Crown Brewing is set to open in June.
  • From today's Tribune: Alderman Tom "Sticky Buns" Tunney, citing opposition from the restaurant industry (of which he's a member as owner of Ann Sather's) intends to force a vote on repealing the ridiculous-but-upheld-in-court foie gras ban. "We think we have the votes to (repeal) it," Tunney told the Trib.
