Morning Box Score

The Cubs did their best to rally from an early deficit last night but ultimately fell 6-5 as the Rockies took the game on a walk-off homer. Down 5-2 in the eighth, Derrek Lee belted a three-run homer to tie the game at 5-5. But in the bottom of the ninth, Sean Marshall gave up the winning homer to the Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez, who also completed the cycle with the game-winning homer. The loss came at a particularly cruel time for some Cubs, just hours after Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot were traded to the Dodgers. Said starter Tom Gorzelanny, "These are great teammates. To lose two guys like that, it's tough. To see them go, it's sad. I know they'll be able to go there and do good things for that team." Last night's game also saw the return of Carlos Zambrano who pitched a brief stint in the seventh inning. The Cubs, losers of four straight, try to salvage the series this afternoon when they send Carlo Silva to the mound (2:10 p.m., CSN). more ›

White Sox rookie Lucas Harrell, called up to replace the traded Daniel Hudson, got off to a shaky start - walking the bases loaded in the second inning - but shook off the first start jitters and paced the Sox to a 6-1 win over Oakland, extending the Sox' win streak to five games. The Sox also gave Harrell the offensive support he needed; tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Sox batted around for three more runs thanks to RBI from A.J. Pierzynski, Andruw Jones, and Gordon Beckham. Paul Konerko and Beckham added runs later in the game as the Sox continued to cruise. Said the rookie Harrell of his debut: "It was definitely good once I got here, because it was kind of a long flight and the time I had between going to the airport and all the anticipation building up, I was excited." The Sox are excited, too, and John Danks keeps the wins coming tonight in game two of the weekend series (6:05 p.m., CSN). more ›

The Morning After: Spring Training In Arizona Wraps Up

The Morning After: Spring Training In Arizona Wraps Up

It's the last push of Spring Training for both squads ahead of Monday's Opening Day. The Cubs got a solid outing from Carlos Silva and the bullpen held to give the team a 2-0 win over the Rockies. The Cubs now head over to Phoenix where they'll play a two-game series against the Diamondbacks before heading to Atlanta to open the 2010 campaign. more ›

Late Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Blank Rockies

Late Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Blank Rockies

It was a soggy, chilly home opener for the Cubs, but they overcame the weather, a rain delay, and blown scoring chances to edge the Rockies 4-0. Even though the awful weather would seem to favor pitchers, the Cubs had plenty of chances to score: the team had the bases loaded in the second but only managed one run and again had the bases loaded in the third and fifth innings without scoring any runs. Koyie Hill scored on an error in the fourth and Derek Lee singled in another run in the same inning. Fukudome knocked in Soriano in the eight inning for insurance. Also of help was Ted Lily, who was much sharper in his second start of the season than his first. Lily threw six and two-third hitless innings to start the game before giving up a hit and a walk in the top of the seventh when he was pulled. Besides giving up only the one hit and no runs, Lily struck out eight and the bullpen did their part holding the Rockies scoreless the rest of the way. The teams have tomorrow off before resuming the series on Wednesday. more ›

Cougars on the Prowl in the Midwest

Are cougars reemerging in the Midwest? A few years ago, a dead mountain lion turned up in New Boston, IL and last month, a live one made its way through southern Wisconsin. Experts tested DNA from a bloody pawprint the animal left and confirmed that it was indeed a mountain lion, the first in Wisconsin in a hundred years. more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Londonist got the big scoop of the week with what may be the first images of notorious street artist Banksy in action. They also got on a runaway train without an operator provoking a response from the transport authorities. Elsewhere, London's answer to Central Station is about to open for business, and Londonist got a sneak preview. Meanwhile, spooky goings-on beneath London Bridge, where a cache of skeletons provided an apt story for Hallowe'en.... more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

LAist began the month with a new food series exploring the popular and unknown late night eats around town. If a Top Chef winner opened up a late night spot in Los Angeles, denizens would flock it, yet the LA Times and other media might be wary. Turning to sports, the Dodger season was quite memorable in the way that it imploded and the LA County Sheriff's Department made some games of their own... more ›

Fans Head to Daley Plaza, Cubs Head to Arizona

Fans Head to Daley Plaza, Cubs Head to Arizona

Chicago won't be waiting until the Cubs win the World Series to celebrate. Given the Cubs' postseason track record over the past 99 seasons, that's probably a smart idea. A rally to celebrate the Cubs making the playoffs will be held at noon on Monday in Daley Plaza. While Cubs fans celebrate downtown, the Cubs themselves will head to Arizona. While baseball's regular season concluded on Sunday, the wild card won't be determined until a... more ›

Cubs Swept... But Brewers Swept, Too

Cubs Swept... But Brewers Swept, Too

If the past week is any indication, it's beginning to look like Houston could end up as the winners of the NL Central this year. While a Cubs surge through June and July allowed them to catch the Milwaukee Brewers in the standings last week, since that time neither club has looked like they want to win the division crown. Last night, Carlos Zambrano got rocked for seven runs over 5.2 innings as the Astros... more ›

Well, Aren't You An Arrogant Bastard?

Well, Aren't You An Arrogant Bastard?

It's Super Bowl weekend, which means that sometime shortly after the coin toss we who actually want to- you know, watch the game- will be subjected to a series of mind-numbing commercials featuring farting horses; women with pneumatic breasticles; middle-aged men casually strolling through the Rockies; comic dating situations; and referees penalizing ordinary people; all for the purpose of promoting cheap beer. The adage "life is too short to drink cheap beer" gets repeated so... more ›

Waiting in the Wings

Waiting in the Wings

The Sammy Sosa trade hasn't even been completed yet, and the Cubs have already found his replacement in right field. As soon as the ink is dry on the deal sending Sosa to Baltimore (which could be this afternoon), the Cubs plan to sign Jeremy Burnitz. The deal would be for one guaranteed year at $4 million with a mutual option for 2006. more ›
