The Windy City Rollers closed out a fantastic 2009 season at home with a big victory over the Rose City Rollers' (Portland) All-Star Team by a 113-73 final. It was a hard-fought bout that still saw the Rollers pull ahead for the win. In the early bout, Milwaukee's Brewcity Bruiders tripped up WCR's Second Wind 62-53. It was also bittersweet evening as it was the final home bout for Rollers Megan Formor, Malice with Chains, and Eva Dead as well as well as travel team bench coach Kami Sutra.

It's a bittersweet weekend for the Windy City Rollers. A big bout with the Wheels of Justice, Portland's Rose City Rollers all-star team, awaits this weekend and National's are just around the corner. But it's also the last home bout of the 2009 season for the WCR and we'll have to wait a few months to see them take to the track once more. Don't worry, though, there's still plenty of time to get in on the fun, starting with the bout on Saturday. The fun starts at 5:40 p.m. when the Roller's B squad, The Second Wind, matches up against some neighbors to the north, Milwaukee's Brew City Bruisers travel team; the main event gets underway at 7 p.m.
The Windy City Rollers' All Stars were in Minneapolis last weekend, taking part in the WFTDA's North Central Regional Tournament, the Brawl of America. And guess who came home champs? The Rollers had little trouble dispensing of the host team, the Minnesota Rollergirls 155-25 in the quarterfinals before easing past Cincinnati 163-36 in the semis. Then it was on to the finals where they had no trouble taking care of Madison 150-56. As the top ranked team from the regionals, the Rollers are headed to Nationals in Philadelphia this November. The Rollers are next at home Saturday, October 17 to take on Portland's Rose City Rollers.
In the early bout, Cleveland's Burning River All-Stars had no problem dispatching the WCR's Second Wind team in their debut, 80-38. In the main event, the WCR's got out to a strong early lead off of big jams from the likes of Beth Amphetamine, Athena DeCrime, Shocka Conduit, and Ruth Enasia. At the break, the Rollers found themselves with a healthy 58-33 lead. Thanks, in part, to a big 20 point jam from Ruth Enasia, the Rollers extended their lead even more in the second half, at one point leading by almost 30 points. But the Charm City Roller Girls would mount a comeback, chipping away at the lead, closing in to within 13 points - just one big jam - of the Rollers. But a last stand on the final jams of the night helped the Rollers hold firm and when the clock hit zero, the Rollers had held off Charm City and prevailed 117-98 for another huge victory.
You know what we've been craving? Roller derby. Thank Heavens, there's more on the way. The ladies of the Windy City Roller All-Star squad have their work cut out for them against the Baltimore's Charm City All-Stars. According to the WCR:
It was a tight contest this past weekend at the UIC Pavilion where the Philadelphia Liberty Belles (blue) edged the Windy City Roller All-Stars (black) 70-69. With the scored tied in the last jam, Philadelphia managed to get a point for the lead and then called off the jam, ending the match with a thrilling victory. The Rollers hit the road to face Seattle on August 15 and return home to take on Baltimore on August 29.
The Windy City Rollers cruised into Philadelphia this weekend for the East Coast Extravaganza and the nation's second-ranked team rolled out undefeated. On Saturday, the Rollers crushed No. 21 Cincinnati 127-54. Then, on Sunday, the Rollers faced a more formidable opponent in No. 8 Boston but still had no trouble coming out victorious as they rolled to a 117-81 victory. The next bout for the WCRs will be a big one as No. 3 ranked Philadelphia comes to town on Saturday, July 25th for a big-time tilt.
Just because the Manic Attackers won the Ivy King Cup, completing a Cinderella run, doesn't mean the ladies of the Windy City Rollers are done. That was only one half of the season. The next half begins this weekend. The WCR All-Stars head to Philadelphia this weekend for the East Coast Extravaganza. First up for our #2 Windy City Rollers squad will be the #21 Cincinnati Rollergirls at 3:30 p.m. (Chicago time) on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, the team takes on #8 Boston at 4 p.m. (Chicago time). You can follow boutcasts live at the Derby News Network site. Knock 'em out, ladies!
We're embarrassed that this slipped by our radar, but on May 30th (the night we were celebrating our fifth birthday!) the Windy City Rollers had their last bout before June's Ivy King Cup Championship. How did things shake out? In a heated thriller, defending champs Hell's Belles fell to the Manic Attackers 123-112. The Manic Attackers, who were winless last year and 3-14 overall heading into this season, finished tied atop the league standings with the Belles, each team at 4-2. In the second bout, it was the previously winless Fury team playing spoiler by beating the Double Crossers 93-87 and keeping the Double Crossers out of contention for the Championship bout. (Be sure to check out the complete recap of the bout here).
Folding chairs were flying and fans were screaming last Saturday at the Windy City Rollers' fifth bout of the home season at UIC Pavilion. In match one, jammer Peg Legs of the Double Crossers (in black) was out for blood, darting around the pack with ease. But she was still no match for Hell’s Belles (in red) powerhouse blocker Megan Formor and stealth jammers Athena DeCrime and Varla Vendetta. HB led at the halfway 42-26. In the end, Hell’s Belles coasted to the win 140-60, showing why they’re first place in the league.
Chicagoist's Kate Gardiner attended the Windy City Rollers' second bout of the season this past Friday at the UIC Pavilion. As usual, there were expectations for some hard-hitting, fast-paced action and the ladies of the Windy City Rollers didn't disappoint. The Manic Attackers showed that their January win - their first victory in two years - wasn't a fluke in a 197-53 drubbing of The Fury. Meanwhile, the Double-Crossers bounced backed from their season-opening loss to upset defending champs Hell's Belles 120-116. Above are Kate's pics from the bout and we'll have a report from Kate later in the week. And if you're wondering, the next exciting bout will be Saturday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion.
Have we ever mentioned how much we love the ladies of the Windy City Rollers? Yes? We have? Well, indulge us once more. It's cold. You're getting cabin fever. You need something to let loose. We can't think of a better catharsis than hitting the UIC Pavilion (525 S. Racine) this weekend to check out the Rollers' 2009 home opener. In the first bout, the Manic Attackers will take on the Double Crossers and the second bout sees The Fury clash with Hell's Belles.
We're big fans of the ladies of the Windy City Rollers and are excited to have them back in the city after a stint in Cicero. And we're even more thrilled to hear they placed second in the recent WFTDA Northwest Knockdown Championship. TOC's Scott Smith runs down the action and hears from Roller Varla Vendetta.
The rough 'n' tumble ladies of the Windy City Rollers are on the prowl for new pivots, blockers, and jammers (those would be teammates). A second “interest meeting” of sorts is set for Monday, October 20: Those who are up for the challenge must then commit to the November 1 tryout session after watching a scrimmage and turning in completed paperwork. Email them if you're interested.
The Windy City Rollers take on the top-ranked Kansas City Roller Warriors this Saturday in the WCR's final home bout of the season and last bout ever at their Cicero digs. Make like a bread truck and haul buns to what is always an exciting, profoundly fun sporting event. Doors open at 6, the fun starts at 7, and the Pink Line takes you right there. [WCR]
Want to be a Windy City Roller? (Oh, boy do I. I'd be "Carmen Slamdiego.") The flat-track roller derby league is holding try-outs at the end of June, and there are two informational meet-and-greets this weekend, one tonight at Cobra and one tomorrow afternoon at North Avenue beach. To skate, you have to be female, at least 21 years old, and have health insurance. [WCR, photo by gingerbydesign]
We went from liking the Redwalls, to really disliking them, to loving them. And now we've got to hand it to them and admit they've done a rad job with their latest video for their latest single. Garage Beatles rock? Check. Super skinny pants? Check. Badass Windy City Roller Derby girls? Hell yeah!

Every last Friday of the month, the bartenders and servers at Kuma's Corner donate their night's tips to a worthy cause. Tonight, it's all going to Windy City Roller Tahira "Tequila Mockingbird" Johnson, who's still recovering from her injury over the summer. If you find yourself gorging on the "Hatebeak" or "Goblin Cock" this evening, please tip better than you usually do. Just in time for Hanukkah, local food writer Leah Zeldes will give a...
That last hour on Fridays always seems to take forever. At least there's plenty of cool stuff cooking this weekend:
SHOOTING: Two homeless men shot in a 24 hour span in Uptown -- they appear to be unrelated. In more shooting news (why is there so much?!): Police have two "persons of interest" in custody Sunday morning after two teenagers were shot in a playlot on the South Side in the Woodlawn neighborhood, blocks from the University of Chicago campus. TRAINS: Our dear friend warns us: This is why you NEVER put headphones in...
Calling all bad girls. If you want to knock around girls on roller skates, then the Windy City Rollers are looking for you. Storming into Chicago in 2004, the WCR became Chicago’s first all-female flat track roller derby team. WCR consists of four league teams, and one all-star team that plays in competition with other leagues. They are a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. And aside from putting on a good, sporty...
Chicagoist admits to being intrigued by the All Women's Roller Derby Leagues here in Chicago. We have written about both the Windy City Rollers and the Chi*Town Sirens. What Chicagoist really likes is when you pair the action of Roller Derby with a visit to your local pub. That is what the Chi*Town Sirens are doing this season. On Thursday night from 6:30 to 9:30 roller-derby fans can meet the women of the Killopatras and...
A Chicagoist without photos would be a very dull Chicagoist indeed. And many of the photos we feature here come from readers. This year, more than 12,000 Flickr photos were tagged with “Chicagoist” – everything from concerts and events to architecture and nature shots to random found objects and people. We want to thank everyone who contributed photos in 2006, and we hope you’ll continue to contribute in 2007.
Everyone needs a hobby. Some people knit, some play video games, others bust some heads out on the roller derby track. How do you blow off steam?
This Sunday, the Windy City Rollers are hosting the Roller Derby Season Playoffs at Cicero Stadium. All four teams of the Windy City Rollers league will be competing to see who will play for the Joy King Cup on November 12. Doors open on Sunday at 5 p.m. The first match features the #2 Double Crossers versus #3 The Fury at 6 p.m. The second match of the night will be between the the top seed Manic Attackers and #4 Hell's Belles immediately following the first match. Tickets to the two matches are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. A portion of the proceeds will benefit PAWS.
We’ll be honest, Chicagoist is a total wimp. We wish we were athletic and coordinated, even adventurous, but the truth is, we just aren’t. Don’t get us wrong, we’re totally up for trying new things, just not anything that could cause us bodily harm. That’s why when Chicago’s newest roller derby league, the Chi*Town Sirens, invited us to one of their practices we immediately said yes. We’re fascinated by anyone who participates in contact sports,...
