The Bears trimmed their roster to the final 53 players over the weekend. There were few big surprises, although some may have questioned keeping both Kahlil Bell and Garrett Wolfe at running back while cutting special teams specialist Tim Shaw, who set the franchise record last season with 30 special teams tackles. Shaw was promptly signed by the Tenessee Titans. Among the other more disappointing cuts were the Bears two highest picks from the 2009 draft - defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert and wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias - veteran guard Josh Beekman, and safety Al Afalava, who started 13 games in '09 as a rookie. But none were a huge surprise.
Bears Finalize 53-Man Roster
Bears Set 53-Man Roster
The Bears get their season underway Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers this (7:00 p.m., NBC) and now we know which men will be on the sidelines. The Bears kept only two QBs - Cutler and Caleb Hanie - sending Brett Basanez to the practice squad. Wide receiver Devin Aromashodu's flower gifts seem to have worked; he was one of six receivers that made the cut. Three players were placed on IR: Running back Kevin Jones (knee), safety Dahna Deleston (hamstring), and defensive end Henry Melton (ankle).
Cubs Solidify Opening Day Roster
The Cubs are closing in on their Opening Day roster. Yesterday, it was the naming of Kevin Gregg over Carlos Marmol as closer. Today, it's roster cuts. Catcher Koyie Hill and infielder Micah Hoffpauir were named to the Opening Day roster while Paul Bako and Mike Stanton were cut loose from the squad. Opening Day - as if you needed reminding - is a week from today. [MLB.com]
