We know Sweet Lou has said he's coming back for 2010, the last year on his contract, but beyond that, what's the future for the Cubs? Hall-of-Famer Ryne Sandberg is making no secret about his desire to coach the Big League team. Sandberg guided the Cubs' AA affiliate to the Southern League championship which would certainly help his resume. As for what awaits him, Sandberg says, "I'm just waiting to see where I'll be headed next year, and to continue to contribute to the organization and gain experience and really enjoy it along the way." Despite the fact White Sox fans outnumber Cubs fans on this site (though a Cubs fan is in charge), we have to take time to acknowledge a historic game played within the Friendly Confines 25 years ago today. It was on June 23rd, 1984 that the baseball world saw what a young player with the goofily-spelled first name of "Ryne" could do.
So does Sweet Lou have to fear for his job? Not quite yet we suspect, but the North Siders have promoted former Cubs great Ryne Sandberg to manager of their Double-A affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies. Ryno had previously managed the Single-A Peoria Chiefs, guiding them to 71-68 and 60-78-1 records in '07 and '08. That's all it takes to earn a promotion in the minors? Of course, we're sure his Hall of Famer status and high profile within the organization means he's cut a little slack.
Tonight at 5:30 is the 9th Annual Worldwide Toast to Harry Caray. It is estimated that fans in as many as 81 countries will raise a glass, likely a cold Bud, in honor of the Hall of Fame announcer.
Major League Baseball's latest fan interaction gimmick is having fans vote for their favorite Hometown Hero, voting for the one player who best personifies each franshise over the course of its history. Either teams or a panel of baseball experts selected the 5 finalists, based on the "criteria of leadership, character, and on-field performance." The full list of teams' nominees can be seen here.
While the Cubs have suffered nearly a century of team futility, that doesn't mean they haven't had some of the best players of all time on the team over the years. Last year, we saw Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg elected to the Hall of Fame. This year's lone selection is Bruce Sutter, yet another former Cub. He was voted in by the BBWAA, receiving votes from 76.9% of the voters (75% req. for entry)....
Ryne Sandberg's having quite a summer. On July 31st, the former Cubs second baseman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On Sunday, the Cubs retired Sandberg's jersey number.
Chicagoist wonders where Ivan DeJesus spent this past weekend... because we know that the guy for whom he ws traded in 1982 spent the weekend being inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. That infamous trade brought a young Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs at the very start of his career. By the end of that career, Sandberg was the face of the Cubs for more than a decade -- covering second base from 1982 until 1997. In that span, he dominated the second base position, winning the MVP Award in 1984, 9 gold gloves, and making 10 All Star Teams while setting the career record for home runs among second basemen. He also lead the Cubs to the playoffs for the first time since their 1945 World Series appearance. The Hall of Fame has an extended recap of Ryno's career, while the Trib devoted an entire special section to the event.
