Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein flew to Florida today to personally break the news to Quade that he isn't in the Cubs' future plans.

Managing Cubs Still Sandberg's Dream
Would Tom Ricketts be willing to hire Ryne Sandberg as the team's next manager, even as it becomes more obvious the team is in a rebuilding mode?
Your Morning Wake-Up Call for June 13, 2011
On the seventeenth anniversary of Ryne Sandberg's first retirement, it'll be mild and partly cloudy.
Ozzie Would Consider Ryno For Staff
Just because the Cubs chose to hire Mike Quade as their new manager doesn't mean Cubs legend and minor league manager Ryne Sandberg won't be in a Chicago dugout come spring. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen stated recently on WSCR-AM that Ryno would make his short list to replace Joey Cora as bench coach should Cora land the Milwaukee Brewers manage job. When filling other recent vacancies on his staff, Guillen has considered the likes of Rene Lachemann, Jerry Royster and Pat Corrales.
Quade Expectations
The Cubs announced their new manager yesterday -- by simply removing the "interim" from Mike Quade's title. But was this the right decision? Some, like the Tribune's David Haugh, applaud the team's hiring of a baseball lifer who guided the team to a 24-13 record to close out the season after Lou Piniella stepped aside to tend to his ailing mother. Across town, the Sun-Times' Rick Telander thinks that Jim Hendry simply hired one of his buddies as though the Cubs are some sort of city department.
Sports Notes: Briggs Status Uncertain, Kane Status Uncertain, Quade and Sandberg Duo?, So Sayeth Ditka
Briggs Status Uncertain: Lance BRigg's right ankle injury that sustained against Carolina kept him out of practice for a second straight game, leading to speculation as to if he'll play against the Seahawks Sunday. Head coach Lovie Smith said that Briggs usually heals late in the week, but didn't say if backup linebacker Brian Iwuh would start in place of Briggs. The linebacker play of Briggs, Urlacher and Pisa Tinaisamoa has been one of the main reasons the Bears have jumped to a 4-1 start.
Morning Box Score
If you thought the Bulls were struggling, that's nothing compared to Detroit which was handed its 13th straight loss last night by the Bulls, 120-87. Luol Deng (27 points) and Derrick Rose (22 points) both shot well last night and Joakim Noah had a 16-11-4 in the winning effort. Overall, the team shot 57 percent from the floor, a marked improvement. It's the Bulls second straight win and brings them to 3-3 in 2010 and 16-20 overall on the season. Next up for the Bulls is a trip to Boston on Thursday (7 p.m., TNT) followed by a home game against the Wizards on Friday (7 p.m., WCIU) before, like their roommates the Blackhawks, they get kicked out of the UC for two weeks to make way for Disney on Ice.
Ryno Has Eyes On The Cubs
We know Sweet Lou has said he's coming back for 2010, the last year on his contract, but beyond that, what's the future for the Cubs? Hall-of-Famer Ryne Sandberg is making no secret about his desire to coach the Big League team. Sandberg guided the Cubs' AA affiliate to the Southern League championship which would certainly help his resume. As for what awaits him, Sandberg says, "I'm just waiting to see where I'll be headed next year, and to continue to contribute to the organization and gain experience and really enjoy it along the way." Tuesday Flashback: Meet Ryne Sandberg
Despite the fact White Sox fans outnumber Cubs fans on this site (though a Cubs fan is in charge), we have to take time to acknowledge a historic game played within the Friendly Confines 25 years ago today. It was on June 23rd, 1984 that the baseball world saw what a young player with the goofily-spelled first name of "Ryne" could do.
Cubs Promote Sandberg
So does Sweet Lou have to fear for his job? Not quite yet we suspect, but the North Siders have promoted former Cubs great Ryne Sandberg to manager of their Double-A affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies. Ryno had previously managed the Single-A Peoria Chiefs, guiding them to 71-68 and 60-78-1 records in '07 and '08. That's all it takes to earn a promotion in the minors? Of course, we're sure his Hall of Famer status and high profile within the organization means he's cut a little slack.
9th Annual Worldwide Toast to Harry Caray
Tonight at 5:30 is the 9th Annual Worldwide Toast to Harry Caray. It is estimated that fans in as many as 81 countries will raise a glass, likely a cold Bud, in honor of the Hall of Fame announcer.
MLB Hometown Heroes
Major League Baseball's latest fan interaction gimmick is having fans vote for their favorite Hometown Hero, voting for the one player who best personifies each franshise over the course of its history. Either teams or a panel of baseball experts selected the 5 finalists, based on the "criteria of leadership, character, and on-field performance." The full list of teams' nominees can be seen here.
Sutter Selected for Hall of Fame
While the Cubs have suffered nearly a century of team futility, that doesn't mean they haven't had some of the best players of all time on the team over the years. Last year, we saw Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg elected to the Hall of Fame. This year's lone selection is Bruce Sutter, yet another former Cub. He was voted in by the BBWAA, receiving votes from 76.9% of the voters (75% req. for entry)....
Cubs Retire Sandberg's Number
Ryne Sandberg's having quite a summer. On July 31st, the former Cubs second baseman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On Sunday, the Cubs retired Sandberg's jersey number.
Sandberg Inducted into Hall of Fame
Chicagoist wonders where Ivan DeJesus spent this past weekend... because we know that the guy for whom he ws traded in 1982 spent the weekend being inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. That infamous trade brought a young Ryne Sandberg to the Cubs at the very start of his career. By the end of that career, Sandberg was the face of the Cubs for more than a decade -- covering second base from 1982 until 1997. In that span, he dominated the second base position, winning the MVP Award in 1984, 9 gold gloves, and making 10 All Star Teams while setting the career record for home runs among second basemen. He also lead the Cubs to the playoffs for the first time since their 1945 World Series appearance. The Hall of Fame has an extended recap of Ryno's career, while the Trib devoted an entire special section to the event.
It's Official: Sandberg Elected to Hall
Former Cubs 2nd baseman Ryne Sandberg was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame today, in his third year of eligibility. He received a total of 393 votes, a slim six vote margin over the 387 necessary to reach the 75% threshhold.
Finally Sandberg's Year?
The Baseball Hall of Fame announces its inductees Tuesday at 12 noon CT. Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg is a virtual lock for the call this year after finishing just short last year. Sandberg received 61 percent of total votes. Sandberg needs 75 percent of total votes for induction.
