This is part of Chicagoist's continuing coverage of the Chicago International Film Festival.
CIFF: "You, the Living" and "Heartbeat Detector"
By Golly!
Chicagoist loves people who like to make themselves laugh, and we are certain that such a person exists on staff at the Chicago Trolley Company. Have you ever noticed that the vast majority of the free trolleys that circle the Loop are named? And not just named, but named to rhyme with “trolley”? Check out the wooden name plates located just beneath the windshield.
Return of the Modern Lover
So remember that Jonathan Richman show at Double Door that got postponed way back in June? Well, it’s rescheduled for tomorrow. You probably already knew that but just in case. Tickets from the June 25th show are being honored and the show’s not sold out yet so this is your last chance to catch him. His new album Not So Much To Be Loved As To Love finds him working in dual romance languages (French and Spanish) but not leaving behind his journeyman guitarist sensibilities. It’s also somewhat fitting that Richman name-drops “Salvador Dali” and “Vincent Van Gogh” on this disc as he’s always been an artist who’s painted vivid sonic portraits himself.
Slicing Up Eyeballs, I Want You to Know
So, youve been wanting to catch up on your French avant-garde cinema? Chicagoist thought so. Tonight, University of Chicago professor James Lastra in conjunction with the Terra Museums exhibition A Transatlantic Avant-Garde: American Artists in Paris: 1918-1939 will give a lecture on the subject at Alliance Franaise (located at 54 W. Chicago). Following his talk will be a light reception and a screening Luis Buuel and Salvador Dalis surrealist classic and inspiration for the Pixies Debaser Un Chien Andalou. (If you see it, Chicagoist dares you not to get the theme music stuck in your head.) The event only costs $10, but reservations are required. Call (312) 337-1070 to save your spot.
