Salvation Army Kettle Haul Down
Bad news for the Salvation Army, which was expecting to raise $12 million ringing bells this season. Their haul so far is down 13 percent.
The Salvation Army—Naughty or Nice?
The corner Santa with his red kettle and brass bell are a familiar and friendly sight this time of year, but the Salvation Army’s anti-gay position doesn’t exactly ring true for many gays and lesbians and their allies.

$5 Million Gift, No Thank You Note Necessary
A dose of warm 'n' fuzzy for today: $5 million dollars has been given to the Salvation Army to put towards building a community center in Chicago's West Pullman neighborhood. Anonymously.

A stand-off with an armed man in a Deerfield motel room ended peacefully this afternoon, after police used tear gas to get the guy to come out. Keep your eyes peeled for a comet on the Northeast horizon. The Salvation Army unveiled a plan today for a community center and athletic facility on West 119th Street. Architect Helmut Jahn designed the center, which will cost $160 million to build and endow. Volunteer searchers looking...
City Puts the Drop on Clothing Boxes
This time of year, many people are looking to weed the closet and clean out the garage to make room for the new pile of stuff they didn't really need acquired over the holidays. So, responding to an altruistic impulse, they decide to donate their old clothes, furniture, appliances, and toys. But that Salvation Army center with the nice workers who help unload the car is so far away. Hey there's a green collection box...

The radar system at O'Hare failed a few times today, causing delays. The daughter of the IL Secretary of State Jesse Whitewas arrested on drug charges. Depressed? Eat fish. Hunger is on the rise in Chicago and it's hitting seniors and kids the hardest. Remember the woman who was found dead in her bath tub in Hyde Park a few months back? They think the cable guy did it. Salvation Holdout Central
The Target Corporation has had as much red as it can stand, apparently. They're dissin' the Salvation Army ringers again this year. It's not to say they're going entirely AWOL, though. They set up a site where you can purchase virtual angels and donate to the Salvation Army.
Ctrl-Alt-Recycle
When Chicagoist is ready to get rid of an old computer or gadget, we try to donate it somewhere. We know, that 233 MHz, 32 MB RAM PC with a dot matrix printer may not be a hot seller at the Salvation Army store, but as long as it's working, we figure someone could get some use out of it, if anything for a stress reliever. But sometimes the damn thing is just broken, a worthless piece of electronic detritus, and dumping it on someone else isn't a morally acceptable option. Tossing it in the trash doesn't feel right either, because we know there are various and sundry metals and plastics inside that will likely outlive the human race.
Give That Fugly Sweater You Don't Wear to Someone in Need
It might have been a mild January, but it's supposed to get really cold really soon. Which makes this a good time to remind you of all the homeless and at-risk people who still need warm clothes to make it through the rest of the winter.
