The Best Eats of 2011
Foodies all over town have been recapping their favorite eats of 2011. Here are the highlights - and some of our favorites, too.
Edible Nerdiness - The Peeps of Catan
Serious Eats certainly has some creative writers. This year, to celebrate Easter, they have started what they call "Peeps Week" - interesting culinary and artistic monstrosities made out of peeps. There is Peeps Yoga, a Peeps Bouquet, and then the entry that warms our nerdy gamer heart - The Peeps of Catan. All you need to play our favorite boardgame is about 10 boxes of peeps... and, well, all the cards. It may not be practical, but it's fun to look at. Plus, if you were unhappy that the blank tile you turned over happened to contain ore, you could just eat it. The entry has instructions and more pictures - now we're just thinking about ways to convert this into a birthday cake.
Three Local Cocktails Make Serious Drinks Beer Cocktails List
Three Chicago beer cocktails made the cut for Serious Drinks' "Drinking Nationally" list (Disclosure: Anthony is the Chicago correspondent for Serious Drinks).
Gene & Jude's Makes the Best Hot Dog in America
Chicago, be proud. According to Serious Eats
and Every Day with Rachel Ray, Chicago has the best hot dog in America. Well, strictly speaking, River Grove has the best hot dog in America, but we are happy to claim it for ourselves. Serious Eats sent tasters out all over the country to test as many hot dogs as they could get their hands on, and Gene & Jude's, open since 1950, beat them all. The second-generation family business still serves a classic menu of hot dogs and french fries - no fancy fusion dogs here.
Build Your Own Edible Football Stadium for the Super Bowl
We're all familiar with gingerbread houses, those sugary sweet agglomerations of royal icing, jelly beans and inedible planks of dough. But this... this is genius. The obsessive compulsive (and we say that with deep admiration and awe) home cooks at Serious Eats have constructed an edible stadium for the super bowl, using only savory ingredients. It took them four and a half hours, and it's the cutest thing on the entire internet. Even better, they tell you how to do it yourself, and give you step-by-step photo instructions. If an untrained cook starts now, they might be done by Sunday.
Everyone Has An Opinion. These Two Are Just Bigger Than Most
Helen Rosner at MenuPages Chicago was all over the "can you top this, MF" between Mikes Nagrant and Gebert Friday regarding their respective city eats guides: Nagrant's at Serious Eats; Gebert's response at Sky Full of Bacon.
Forbes Traveler Doesn't Get Local Ice Cream
Andrew Huff at Gapers Block's Drive-Thru blog called Forbes Traveler's decision to include Margie's on its list of the best ice cream in America "lazy ice cream journalism," while Mike Nagrant lists his alternatives at Serious Eats.
Serious Eats Seriously Likes Chuck Sudo
The latest object of food blog Serious Eats' affection is none other than Chicagoist Food and Drink Editor Chuck Sudo. Way to go, Chuck!
To Replate or to Simply Give it Away
The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless estimates that 166,000 people experience homelessness in Chicago. We aren't going to try to imagine how difficult it must be to be without a place to come home to, and we certainly don't know what it is like to be so hungry you would dig through garbage for a bite to eat. We've led a pretty charmed life, so far, and so we try to give back where we...
Chicago Represents at the Beard Awards
The James L. Beard Awards — the Oscars of the culinary world — were handed out last night. Though Chicago didn't win a large number of awards, we did win one of the most important ones, so we can take solace in that.
Poochies Hot Dog Named Top Five Dog in U.S
If we had to think of the top five hot dog spots in the city, we would need some time. There are some obvious choices — a dog in the Cell for one — and there are the famous spots, but choosing the five best would take more than a casual effort.
