A second Chicago-area victim of the Fort Hood shooting has been identified. CBS 2 is reporting that 21-year-old Francheska Velez of Chicago was among the 13 people killed. Velez, a 2006 graduate of Kelvyn Park High School, had just returned from Afghanistan and was pregnant, according to her uncle who spoke with CBS 2. Earlier, it was reported that Bolingbrook's Michael Pearson was also shot and killed in yesterday's shooting rampage.

At about 9:15 p.m. on Saturday night, Dequarius Cannon, 17, and another individual were sitting in a car at the intersection of 105th and Peoria streets on the Far South Side in the Washington Heights neighborhood when someone approached their vehicle and demanded valuables from them, according to police News Affairs Officers Laura Kubiak. Cannon, who was in the driver's seat, got shot in his left temple, Kubiak said.
A CPS student was shot and killed yesterday afternoon in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The student was identified as 17-year-old Gamaliel "Gama" Toscano, a 10th grader at Tilden High School. The shooting occurred in the 1100 block of West 47th St around 2:45 p.m. As of last night, no one was in custody in connection with the shooting. [CBS 2]
On Saturday night around 10:30 p.m., officers from the Targeted Response Unit were on patrol in the 8200 block of South Marquette Avenue, an area notorious for ongoing drug and gang activity. Officers noticed a man standing on a porch holding a weapon, according to a police statement. As the officers exited their vehicle and ordered the 41-year-old man to drop his weapon, he allegedly attempted to shoot them twice, before trying to run away.
Ramiro Guevara, 17, was shot and killed inside V Live, a Logan Square night club, last night after getting into an argument with another man. The man who shot Guevara fled the club after the shooting and police say no one was in custody. About 2,000 patrons were estimated to have been at the club, which admits teens but uses the wristband system to denote who is and who isn't allowed alcohol. [Tribune]
A sculpture dedicated to the victims of the February 2008 campus shooting was unveiled earlier this week. Created by NIU alumni Bruce Niemi, the piece is made of stainless steel and called, "Remembered." Niemi said of his sculpture, "When I create a work, I try to make it be positive and uplifting. No matter how bad things are, there's always something good that can come out of it. I hope people can walk away with this with a feeling of calmness and piece of mind.'' An incident in South Lawndale ended with police shooting a man after he allegedly pointed a gun at them. Officers responded to a call of shots fired and saw a vehicle fleeing the scene. The car was stopped by police and that's when the man is alleged to have pointed a gun at officers who, in turn, shot the man, who was last reported in stable condition. No officers were hurt. The Independent Police Review Authority is reviewing the case. [CBS 2]
A man suspected of shooting his parents last night has barricaded himself inside the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center's emergency room. According to CBS 2:
Yesterday afternoon in the Woodlawn neighborhood, an off-duty police officer shot and killed a teen who he said shot another person. It began at around 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon when the police officer reported seeing 17-year-old Corey Harris shoot another person near the intersection of 69th St. and King Drive. The officer witnessed that shooting and chased Harris to the 6800 block of South Eberhart Avenue. The city's violent July has now extended into August. A gang-related shooting broke out at a funeral yesterday afternoon on city's West Side injuring six. The funeral was for admitted gang member Cornelius Antwon Robinson who had died of a heart attack. A man walked up to the crowd of mourners on the sidewalk and open fire on one man in particular and then began shooting those around him. Police say the shooting was gang-related and indicated that while most witnesses weren't cooperating, a few were. They're also using surveillance video from two nearby pod cameras to help sift out details. [CBS 2]

Police have arrested two men in connection with last night's shooting in which an innocent 9-year-old bystander, Chastity Turner, was killed while washing her dog on her grandmother's porch. Three others, including Turner's father, were also hurt in the shooting, which occurred last night around 7 p.m. in Englewood, but none of their injuries were life-threatening. Sources also tell media outlets that a weapon has been recovered and testing is underway to see if it was involved in the shooting. Earlier, sources said a green van matching the description of the one used in the shooting, believed to be gang-related, was also recovered. The Tribune and Sun-Times have more on tragic incident, including information that Turner's father is not cooperating with authorities in their investigation.
The teen accused of shooting and killing teen Blair Holt on-board a CTA bus in May 2007 has pleaded guilty to the shooting. Michael Pace, 17, will serve between 45 years and life for the murder as well as an additional sentence of 6 to 30 years for aggravated battery. Kevin Jones, considered Pace's accomplice, pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, earning him a 10 year sentence. Four others on the bus were injured in the shooting. Chicago Police answered a call of a break-in at Whittier Elementary School early this morning and discovered a pair of boys, 13 and 14 years old, inside. The 14-year-old then allegedly pointed a gun at police who shot the boy in the leg. According to reports, the boy did not fire on police and the other teen did not have a weapon. Per the Sun-Times:
After yesterday's shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C., the Illinois Holocaust Museum is on "heightened alert." Richard Hirschhaut, executive director of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, called the shooting in D.C. a "senseless attack." According to the Sun-Times:
A shooting this afternoon outside of DuSable High School has left one dead and another injured. There's no word if either of the victims was a student, but the Tribune reports that at least one was reported to be an adult.
Police negotiators tried to resolve a barricade situation in Chicago’s Northside yesterday, but their 12 hour efforts were to no avail. Police were originally called to a home in the 3600 block of North Tripp Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. responding to a report that a man was threatening to kill himself.

The two people involved in this weekend's incident on the Mag Mile, which ended with one of the suspects shot by police in a struggle, have been charged. According to Chicago Breaking News:
Chaos erupted on the Mag Mile yesterday when police were involved in a shooting while trying to apprehend a woman who tried to use stolen credit cards at the Louis Vuitton store (919 N. Michigan Ave.). Employees recognized the woman from a previous visit and notified police who went to apprehend the woman. She attempted to get-away with a male companion, who was driving a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Heavy traffic, however, prevented the get-away and the driver fled on foot. The woman attempted to drive the car herself, at that point, but police caught up to her and a struggle ensued during which the woman allegedly tried to grab an officer's gun. According to a statement released by police [via the Sun-Times], “The female offender struggled with an officer and attempted to disarm the officer, at which point shots were fired and the female offender was struck in the abdomen."
- Police shot and killed an 18-year-old man late last night after the man had opened fire in a South Side convenience store, injuring four.

A man shot and killed by police this morning was a suspect in 30 area armed robberies. The shooting happened around 7 a.m. at a Marathon gas station in Harwood Heights. Police and FBI agents were staking out the gas station as it matched a pattern the suspect followed. Damn, guys. Good call. Between 40 and 50 law enforcement officials have been on surveillance in the area, looking for a man who either drove a white van or worked with a get-away driver who did. Officers were watching the Marathon station, located at at West Montrose Avenue and Forest Preserve Drive, when they saw the white van park and the suspect, placing a surgical mask over his face, enter the store.
In the stupid category, a Rockford man is likely to face charges after “accidentally” shooting a friend in the head when he was aiming for a stray dog. Clearly, there is more to this story than we will ever know.
Rockford Police Sgt. Milo Scheffels says the incident occurred early Saturday evening and appears to have been accidental. Scheffels says there were reports that the dog was bothering people, but the gunman missed in shooting at it.After the shooting, the man fled the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital and was treated for a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound to the head. [WLS]
Two incidents in the last 24 hours have underscored the recent crisis of violence involving Chicago Public School students. Last night, a boy who - until just recently - had attended Sullivan High School - was shot in Rogers Park last night in what appears to be a gang-related incident. At last report, the student, who was shot multiple times, was in serious condition at St. Francis Hospital. This comes on the heels of CBS 2's report on Monday that 508 Chicago Public School students had been shot in the last 16 months - a number that has grown to 510 including last night's shooting. In addition to the shooting, a student was stabbed at DuSable High this morning. Police hadn't said whether the incident happened on school grounds but confirmed the assailant was in custody and the weapon used had been recovered. The student was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in serious-to-critical condition.
