One Great Dish: Grand Plateaux of Seafood at Maude's
Snappy Shrimp for a Fried Food Fix
In Midwestern Chicago, quality seafood places at relatively reasonable prices are hard to come by, but those willing to trek to the North Center neighborhood can find some seafood steals at Snappy’s Shrimp House.
Simple Cooking: Spicy Tequila Shrimp with Cilantro-Lime Sauce
Summer in Chicago is a fickle mistress. It just so happens that it's hot this week, so let's hurry up and get some hot-weather food cooking. It'll probs start snowing next week anyway, so don't put your one-piece snowsuit, dibs chair, and crockpot too far back into the closet just yet. In the meantime, celebrate this heat, don your bikini, and try our spicy tequila shrimp for dinner. The cilantro-lime sauce we pair it with is a versatile option for just about any grilled meat or vegetable, and the citrusy kick is just what you need on a hot summer evening. Refrigerate the sauce in a tightly sealed container and it will keep for about a week.
Fake Food of the NRA Show: A Retrospective
Earlier in the week, we brought you our favorite signs of the National Restaurant Association show. Taken out of context, they provide endless comedy gold, but they don't represent the true artistic potential of the NRA. That honor falls to the fake food. Now, we should be clear: we're not talking about "fake food" in the enviro-local-nutritional sense. While there was plenty of fried/preserved/artificial junk food being hocked at NRA, when we say "fake," we mean plastic. It makes sense that a restaurant show would need to display food, and most of it was real and ready to be sampled. But a fair amount of food at the NRA was sculpted, and some was better than others. In fact, we almost broke our teeth on a couple pieces that weren't glued down. Would you have known better? Check out the gallery.
Luc Longley: Bull, Bidder, Science Winner
Former Chicago Bull Luc Longley has a few NBA championship rings and therefore probably has a few thousand dollars lying around. But instead of buying a car or a bigger house, Longley has done something a tad more unusual: he bought the naming rights to a new shrimp discovered off the coast of his native Australia. University of Melbourne doctoral student Anna McCallum discovered the new shrimp but instead of naming it herself, decided to auction off the naming rights with proceeds going to the Australian Marine Conservation Society. Longley made the winning bid of $2,900 and named the shrimp Lebbeus clarehanna after his daughter, Clare Hanna Longley, in honor of her 15th birthday. According to The Scientist:

Um, yeah. Hopefully you're making more progress today than this little guy.
Simple Cooking – Spicy Garlic-Paprika Shrimp
After a visit to Café Ba Ba Reeba and a taste of their excellent Gambas al Ajillo (spicy garlic shrimp), we decided we had to replicate it at home. After some experimentation and advice from friends, we came up with this adaptation. The recipe calls for a pound of shrimp, which will serve two as a main course or four as an appetizer. Be sure to have some bread on hand to sop up the garlic-flavored oil. Watch out – everyone will want to steal your recipe!
