Oh, how we wished we would have spent more time at the Bongo Room before we had our baby. This trendy Wicker Park eatery, famous for its sugary brunch specials, lives up to the hype. Taking a child to eat there, however, requires some savings and a bit of strategy. First, the food is as rumored: tasty, sweet dishes make up a good portion of the menu. We tried their chocolate French toast ($10.75, pictured),...
Since Chicagoist started replacing red meat with veggies and tofu some seven years ago, folks back home have always thought us a bit crazy. Five years later we’d show up to Easter dinner only to have family members shocked that we still wouldn’t partake in the ham-eating. Thankfully for us, the teasing and concerns about our diet were never nearly as bad as those for our vegetarian, not to mention vegan, friends.
Finding sushi that is both inexpensive and edible is a difficult task. We’ve tried the cheap stuff. We’ve tried the good stuff. But finding them together had always been a challenge -- until we dropped by Matsuya. on 3469 N. Clark St.
The Chicago Marathon is less than a month away. Since Chicagoist has not exactly been training for the October race, we are thinking of taking this one off. Although we will not be on the list of Elite runners competing in the event the event organizers continue to add more top flight runners to the roster which can be found on the event website.
As the kids start heading back to school, it’s time to close the books on the summer movie season. We’ll leave it to the New York Times to do the post-mortem on Hollywood. Apparently some movies are not very good, which may lead to decreased attendance and box office receipts. In other news, scientists have learned that water is wet and children like candy. With the days getting shorter, there are a few notable screenings...
Since Chicagoist doesn't have a job right now, we didn't try to attend the sold out shows at the Vic this week by Chicago's very own Billy Corgan. It does look like that it may not have been so difficult a task to get tickets to the 2nd show, but by then we were well into our couch recovering from the 4th's festivities.
Two weeks ago, CNN ran a story that after almost 11 years as White House Chef Walter Scheib is hanging up his apron and "pursuing other opportunities."
An article in yesterday's Chicago Tribune explored Gov. Blagojevich's refusal to increase the fee for a state firearms license. Currently the price of a Firearms Owners Identification Card is $5.00 while the article says estimates of the cost of processing the cards vary from at least $7.39 per card to $15.
This Dodgeball is like "Friendster for mobile phones" and is now available for Chicago. Let us break it down for you - You go to the Dodgeball site and sign up to become a member. Then when you want people to know about your whereabouts, you send a text message (like "@ Double Door") to the Dodgeball e-mail address. The service then sends out text messages with your name, location and headshot to all of your Dodgeball friends, as well as any friends of friends (FOAFs) who have checked in within a 10-block radius of your location. So if you and your friends all sign up.. and your out feeling social, you can find out if any of them are in your area. And since your FOAFs also come up, there's the potential to hook up (headshots!) and make new friends.
