We love Sloan. Their latest album, The Double Cross, proves that the band, twenty years into their career, is showing no signs of slowing down. The only thing that excites us more than their records, though, is their live show. The quartet from Halifax is truly impressive as they display their indelible pop smarts and arena-sized rawk-n-roll abandon amidst a flurry of instrument switching onstage. Their concerts are truly joyous events, filled with dancing, hand clapping, fist pumping and a couple gallons of sweat.

Rockin' Our Turntable: Sloan
Twenty years. Ten albums (not counting live albums, EPs or rarities compilations). One band. And at this point, even after they've cranked out so much material over such a long period of time, Sloan remains just as an amazingly vital and prolific a band as ever. In fact, despite the band's future seeming in doubt just a few years ago, the quartet from Halifax seems to be experiencing a bit of a renaissance.
QUICK SPINS: Sloan, Jason Falkner
In which we take a quick look at a few recent musical releases.
Swooning Over Sloan
Sloan is one of the most consistent bands in the history of rock and/or roll and the recently released Hit & Run EP continues their 18 year streak of excellence. Seriously, how is a band this good and not filling stadiums? Their blend of anthemic power-pop / classic rock melded with Beatles harmonies and the occasional punk outburst is undeniably intoxicating. And their stage shows? Member bounce from instrument to instrument, trading off lead vocals from song to song, all the time proving the fact through blood, sweat and spit that their is not a weak cog within their fantastic musical machine.
Rockin' Our Turntable: The Best Music of 2008
Yup, here it is, the inevitable "Best of 2008" music list (a later post centering on the top local offerings is forthcoming). In order to spare our readers the pain of reading through yet another list that tries too hard to impress with obscure releases or toe the party line on Stereogum / Pitchfork approved artists, we continue our personal decade-plus tradition of merely listing what we actually liked in 2008. That means that the albums below are the one we kept finding ourselves turning to when we wanted to kick back and enjoy some tunes. Sure, there was more artistically challenging stuff released this year than some of the selections below -- and we certainly do appreciate that sort of thing -- but our year end list reflects which music ultimately did for us what we think rock and/or roll is ultimately meant to do to any listener: it grabbed us by the heart and/or crotch and wouldn't let go.

Sloan played Double Door last Monday and we were lucky enough to catch them rip through a blistering set in top form. After the show we headed down the street to check out Rehab at evilOlive and had a surprisingly good time. We recommend checking it out sometime.
Sloan Powers Back Up
It's hard to believe Sloan has been around for over 17 years. It's even harder to believe that in that time the band has released 9 studio albums, 1 live album, and zero weak albums. Sure, some discs are stronger than others, for instance even though we loved 2006's 30-track Never Hear The End Of It the disc probably could have benefited by a bit of judicious culling, but overall the band has a stunning track record for creating memorable rock and/or roll.
