Chicago Blizzard 2011: The Movie

Snowpocalypse has the fundamentals of a Hollywood blockbuster, but we know truth is always stranger than fiction. Instead of bringing outsiders to tell our story local videographer Steven Vargas has set out on a different approach to encapsulate Chicago’s third worst blizzard. more ›

Snow From Space

Snow From Space

So what did part of the Midwest look like after last week's Snowpocalypse? While it cuts off just south of our area, the above satellite image still gives you a good idea and just how expansive the storm was. more ›

Today's Weather: Excavation

Today's Weather: Excavation

Well, the Snowpocalypse didn't quite live up to the foot of snow prediction, but it still dumped a decent amount of snow on all of us and certainly snarled traffic and various commutes. Most of the snow has shifted to Northwest Indiana but we'll still see some flakes throughout the day here while we dig out from all the snow. Highs today will reach the mid-20s but gusty winds will blow a lot of snow around, reducing visibilities and wind chills so be careful out there. And the story tonight will be the chill as another blast of cold air moves in, dropping our lows into the single digits overnight. more ›

City Disputes Sun-Times Snow Removal Budget Report

City Disputes Sun-Times Snow Removal Budget Report

With today's snowpocalyse, Chicagoans are already expressing concern about a Sun-Times report that says the city has already spent 40 percent of its yearly snow removal budget. But the city insists that's not true as the budget runs from January 1 to December 31. The $6.6 million spent in December on snow removal comes out of the '09 budget, not the 2010 budget. more ›

Today's Weather: Snowpocalypse

Today's Weather: Snowpocalypse

The snow started falling sometime after midnight and already we have a few inches on the ground making the morning commute extremely hazardous. The evening commute will be even worse, it seems. As highs reach the mid-20s, snow will continue to fall throughout the day, piling up 5 to 7 inches by the end of the day. Overnight, lows will be in the mid-teens with even more snow. By the time the storm moves out tomorrow morning, you could see close to a foot of snow wherever you are. more ›

Daley Spending Overtime Funds on Snowplowing

Daley Spending Overtime Funds on Snowplowing

While this latest winter storm is more fizzle than snow, Mayor Daley, perhaps remembering the outrage over last year's snowplowing failures, had prepared to reach into the city's overtime snow plowing fund to keep the streets clear. "You have to," Daley told the Tribune. "You bring them out at certain times. We do that all year." Streets and Sanitation has deployed 175 snow plow drivers to clear main streets across the city. And while Daley is hopeful that they'll be able to focus on side streets soon, he warned drivers to be careful. "Even arterial roadways that appear to be dry and clean can still be slippery in these types of weather conditions," the mayor said. more ›

Mayor Daley Faults Media For Snowstorm Hysteria

The first flakes of the season's first big snowstorm are falling just now and we could see anywhere from 1 inch to 4 feet of snow depending on who you believe (and really, we believe only what our eyes see in terms of the weather sometimes). And as that first storm rolls in, Mayor Daley today blamed the media for something else: hysteria over the snow. Thing is...well, he's right. The media does kind of go a little bit overboard. In fact, so much so that they're even self-aware of it, as the videos below show [via the geniuses at EiT]. more ›
