Our recent visit to Star Lounge Café delighted our specialty coffee needs but we will confidently say that their sandwiches alone are a reason to go back. Particularly for breakfast. They offer an egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich as well as a bagel with peanut butter and banana (childhood fav!) but the sandwich that stuck out most was the brie, spinach and mushroom hot panini. And yes, for breakfast. The savory brie oozed out the slightly buttery, toasted ciabatta and there was just the right amount of vegetables inside- enough to make us think we’re actually having a healthy breakfast and not enough to overpower the sandwich. Choose grapes instead of chips and you’ve got yourself a meal. The secret to their sandwich? They get it from the highly adored lunch spot, Southport Grocery. Ahh yes. It’s all starting to make sense. Star Lounge’s specialty is coffee and they’re stickin’ to it. Better to get your sandwiches from a place that specializes it than throw some turkey on bread and serve it to your patrons like many coffee shops do and shouldn’t.

After receiving a tip from a Chicagoist reader, we recently visited Ukrainian Village coffee shop, Star Lounge Café. The space is open and welcoming, with pieces by local artists decorating the burnt orange walls. There is the usual mixture of tables and couches, but what stood out most was the actual bar at the front of the café complete with tall barstools and close-up view of the baristas at work. Continue walking back through the glass doors and there's a hammock hanging on a spacious wooden deck and a slew of patio furniture on a grassy backyard. For a moment we thought we were transported to a mini Happy Village.
We read somewhere that the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (formerly the Chicago Academy of Sciences) is one of the least visited of the Chicago museums, but it’s one of our favorite places in the city to bring our toddler. Unlike the MSI, the Notebaert’s exhibits are accessible to those under three feet tall. The taller displays have low interactive panels and those that don’t have stools nearby. And the bugs! What kid doesn’t like bugs?
Valentine’s Day had always been a great excuse to go out to dinner. Unwilling to foist our screaming banshee toddler on fellow romantic diners these days, we’ve created a new luxe tradition to celebrate: after bed time, we’re reheating Charlie Trotter’s take out.
Chicagoist has long been a fan of Southport Grocery and Café, helmed by chef/owner Lisa Santos. The small, specialized shop and bakery also has a take-out/eat-in menu for adults as well as a handful of dishes especially for kids. This menu section, nicknamed “For Our Little Ones”, has a variety of foods for $5 that include breakfast and lunch options. It’s ideal if your kid wants noodles for breakfast or pancakes for dinner. Choices range...
We were stoked (yes, stoked) when Southport Grocery and Café opened a few years back. The fresh sandwiches on artisan bread, the tasty cupcakes and cookies, the savory omelets — the spot has become a great place for brunch, lunch and takeout. So when we heard that our favorite neighborhood market now has an online grocery store where you can purchase homemade and gourmet goodies without leaving your home, it was too much. We...
Brunch is a bitch, people.
