Why is Mike Quade smiling? It's probably because he's been named the Cubs liked enough of what they saw from his 24-13 record after Lou Piniella retired in August to remove the "interim" title from his job.

Bulls Draft Pair Of Power Forwards
Heading into Thursday night's NBA draft, the Bulls were looking for some help with their inside scoring and some depth in the backcourt. When the night was over, they had addressed the first need twice over while neglecting the other entirely.
The Friday Flashback: Art Shay
Art Shay is without a doubt one of the greatest photographers this city ever produced. For sixty years he's captured some of the most iconic images of city life. His 1988 book Nelson Algren's Chicago (Visions of Chicago) inspired scores of photographers, both professional and amateur, to pick up their cameras and pound the pavement looking for the perfect shot.
Illini Beaten in Rose Bowl
Only the biggest of dreamers gave Illinois a chance of beating the semi-professional USC Trojans in yesterday's 94th annual Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, USC beat the Illini like the proverbial red-headed stepchild 49-17. The academic conclusion to the game also led to some wonderful entendre-laden headlines in the dailies: "Case of California Creamin'", "Too Much Booty Puts Illini on the Defensive", and "Trojans Pull Out All the Stops" are some of our favorites. The loss also provided Jay "the Joke" Mariotti with another opportunity to pen his now-patented "sports in this state really suck" columns, complete with desperate stabs at modern cultural relevance and creating lame-ass nicknames, this time referencing "Knocked Up" and calling Illini head coach Ron Zook "Zooker."
Blogging 'Bout Brian's Back
For the past couple weeks, the local sports media had been increasingly vocal on Brian Urlacher's lack of accessibility with reporters, and his lack of words when he did talk.

World Sport Chicago Serves Up International Volleyball
World Sport Chicago, an organization that has helped spearhead Chicago's 2016 OIympic Bid, is working hard to bring international sporting events to Chicago to strengthen that bid. This weekend is an example of that effort; the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team will take on Italy here in Chicago as part of the FIVB World League. South Side Cheap Eats: Howie's
While Chicagoist awaits the imminent opening of Eleven City Diner and breaking in the on-duty soda jerk they're promising we decided to walk two blocks south to a place that's been serving up affordable food for over two years. Nestled in the middle of a packed block for dining that includes the trendy Opera, Gioco, and Zapatista, proprietor Howard "Howie" Stein advertises his eponymous restaurant as "the South Loop's neighborhood joint." While Howie's doesn't have the pretension level of its neighboring restaurants, the atmosphere is perfect for enjoying a quick nosh; the quality of the food is impeccable for a fast food joint; and, compared to its neighboring restaurants, the prices are affordable enough to fit any budget.

All Skate
The latest filmed-in-Chicago movie hits theaters this weekend when Roll Bounce arrives this Friday. Robert Teitel and George Tillman, Jr., who brought Barbershop to the screen and more film dollars to the South Side, produced the film. Like that film and its spinoffs, Roll Bounce’s charm comes from its characters, not a wholly original plot. X (played by Bow Wow) and his crew are the kings of the Palisades Garden roller rink on the...
World Pizza Eating Championship
Chicago is a sports town and Chicago is a pizza town, so it's only natural that it plays host to the Bacci World Pizza Eating Championship this Saturday at Bacci Pizzeria in Little Italy.
