With all the mudslinging in the presidential primary and the wrangling in the congressional races here, we almost forgot that the Green Party won a ballot line in Illinois last election. Unlike past elections, where Green candidates struggled to get on and stay on the ballot, this year marks the first time the Greens have had a state-wide ballot line, thanks to former gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney breaking the 5 percent threshold with 10.39 percent...

The latest Wall Street Journal/Zogby poll has Governor Rod Blagojevitch (which is apparently Zogby for Blagojevich) ahead of Republican challenger Judy Baar Topinka, 43% to 37%, despite having a low approval rating. Of course, other recent polls by Rasmussen Reports and Glengariff Group show Topinka ahead by a slight margin, so take it for what it's worth. To Carol Marin, it's not worth much. Today she reminds us that November is still a long way away.

Suburban Elmwood Park bills itself as a “great place to live, shop, work and play.” They might want to change that to a great place to live, shop, work and play, unless you’re a teenage immigrant. Specifically, a 14-year-old Ecuadorian girl here on a temporary B-2 visa. Then, not so much. On April 2, when we move our clocks forward one hour to adjust for Daylight Saving Time, two counties in Indiana, Starke and Pulaski, and six in the southwestern corner of the state won't do anything, just like they have done for years, effectively switching them from Eastern time to Central. But this time they'll stay for good.

The rules have been proposed to meet requirements of No Child Left Behind law demand that all teachers be "highly qualified" by the end of the year. The rest of the...
Remember back when Gov. Blago asked for a junk food ban in elementary and middle schools? Fine & dandy, we say. The Illinois State Board of Education has now proposed some rules that focus on nutritional content of foods rather than broad categories of food. Excellent. Especially when right now all chips are not allowed at all under the board's current definition of junk food.
If you would like to receive a cushy position on the Illinois state pension boards, then you better pay up and walk around wearing an “I ♥ Blago” button.

Democrats are assembling teams of lawyers to be deployed throughout the nation should another swing-state turn into the Florida of 2000. This is more likely than not with the dead-heat the 2004 race has been so far. So if you're planning an election night party you'd better stock up on supplies. The party could last all week.
Did you know there are two other people besides Barack Obama and Alan Keyes registered as candidates with the State Board of Elections for Illinois' U.S. Senate seat?
