Many Categories Of Crime Drop, But Murder Is Still Up

Although crime overall may be down in the city, the murder rate is still rising. This year between January and the end of August, 313 people were killed, which is five more people during the same time period in 2009, Chicago Police officials said via the Chicago Sun-Times. During the same time period, crime decreases occurred in the following categories: sexual assaults (10.1 percent), robbery (14.1 percent), aggravated battery (6.1 percent), and aggravated assault (12.9 percent). Unfortunately, motor vehicle theft increased by 21.2 percent. Police also seized 5,679 weapons--189 more than they seized at this time last year. more ›

Violent Weekend Concludes

On the heels of the announcement last week that crime in Chicago was down in the first half of 2009 over the first half of 2008, Chicago experienced one of its most violent weekends so far this year. Weekend violence accounted for 63 shootings, one stabbing, and a total of 10 deaths. Of course, looking back at last summer's violence, the bloody start to this July is pretty pedestrian, all the more reason to be skeptical about that recent decrease claim: last year's murder tally was the highest in five years, undermining the claim that violent crime is decreasing rather than just returning to normal levels. more ›

Two Brothers Killed in Two Weeks

Two Brothers Killed in Two Weeks

Carnell Pitts, 18, was shot and killed at a house party on the South Side late Friday night, just two weeks after his younger brother, Kendrick Pitts, 17, was shot and killed along with two others. Carnell Pitts had allegedly been arguing with someone and was shot in the back. He later died at Advocate Trinity Hospital of multiple gunshot wounds. The death was ruled a homicide, and the police do not have any suspects in custody at this time. more ›
