Millennium Park was the meat lover's paradise Friday night - quite a distinction in a city that loves its beef. The kick-off event for Chicago Gourmet, the Hamburger Hop, saw chefs from all across the city competing to make the best burger.
Hamburger Hop Returns to Chicago Gourmet for a Second Year
Simple Cooking: Ginger Lover's Steak Marinade with Whiskey and Jalapeno
Back off, red hair enthusiasts. We’re talking about real fresh ginger today. If your regular steak marinade or seasoning is boring you, we have your cure right here, lover. This ginger and whiskey marinade goes especially well on steak, but could be used on poultry or other meats too. Control the heat by adding more or less jalapeno to your taste.
Gene and Georgetti's 1940's-Style Anniversary Dinner
River North steakhouse staple Gene and Georgetti's celebrates 70 years of business this year, and as a treat to loyal customers and a fundraiser for charities Common Threads, Standing Tall and St.Vincent DePaul Center, G&G's put out a prix fixe menu at the same prices you probably would have paid 70 years ago. If you were lucky enough to score a reservation over the weekend, you paid $15.25 for an appetizer, a salad, a main course, ice cream dessert, and two drink tickets.
Review: Jibaritos at La Cocina Boricua de la Familia Galarza
Where do you get your jibaritos? WTF is a jibarito? Where is the bread? What is the filling? Why do you ask so many questions? We recently visited Cocina De Galarza (named Cocina Boricua on their sign) at Fullerton and Western to give their jibarito a try.
What's for Dinner? Grilled Pitas with Steak and Vegetables and Cayenne-Lime Yogurt Sauce
It's getting hot out there, and that means it's time to start cooking outside again. And no, we don't mean hotdogs over a garbage can fire, despite how fun that sounds. We mean grilling! You can do this on a George Foreman too, but wouldn't it be nicer to stand outside in the warm Chicago sunlight, beer in hand, filling your neighborhood with the smell of warm, soft bread and seared cow meat? Your neighbors will love you.
Food Pr0n - Butcher & Larder Edition
The last time we visited The Butcher & Larder, it was still an empty shell - but yesterday, we got a chance to eat there. We're still in a happy place. Rather than writing any more about the already-beloved butcher shop, we'll stick to the visuals. Drool over the pretty pictures of some of B&L's sandwich offerings and of the best steak we've eaten in years. If you haven't gotten a chance to visit, go now.
Michael Jordan Sues Dominick's, Jewel
Michael Jordan, the Basketball Hall of Fame inductee who led the Chicago Bulls to six championships, has filed suit against Dominick's and Jewel, claiming "violation of the right of publicity, false endorsement, false designation of origin, deceptive business practices, and unfair competition." Both grocery chains ran full page ads in a special commemorative issue of Sports Illustrated dedicated to his life and his career.
"STEAK!!!"
Ah, to have the budget of a magazine to play with. Scott Smith at Time Out Chicago gets to play with dolls action figures. Now Chicago Magazine's Jeff Ruby and John Kenzie have created "The Adventures of Steak Man," the "corn-fed crusader" who bears a striking resemblance to a middle-aged Burt Ward.
Tru's Got a Serious Beef
Because it's never too early in the day for a little bit of food porn. Chicagoist heard from a little birdie that Tim Graham, chef de cuisine at Tru, is serving a fourteen-day aged Kobe ribeye soaked in a marinade of dark sake and soy sauce before grilling. That steak is then served with mashed and corked potatoes. Now we love us some Kobe beef. Next to Piedmontese it's one of our favorites. Right now...
One Great Sandwich: Freddie's Breaded Steak
Bridgeport's treated us well. As we've written numerous times both here and elsewhere, the neighborhood grew on us. When we first moved out south eight years ago we never would have thought that we'd have lived here as long as we have; we just thought of Bridgeport as a stop-gap to moving back to the north side. Now it seems like others are clued in to what we knew long ago: this neighborhood rocks....
