Yes, it's the 30th Anniversary of that fateful day and we couldn't let it pass without saying anything (check out The Reader's cool feature on it). [via Deadspin] more ›

Steve Dahl will once again be available to the masses for public consumption. Starting September 8, Dahl will be available in podcast form via the JACK website, his own website, or iTunes. Rod Zimmerman, senior vice president and market manager for CBS Radio Chicago, issued a statement, saying, "In the months since Dahl has been off the air, we've heard from listeners across the country who miss his daily commentary and one-of-a-kind insight. We're excited to move forward with this partnership satisfying legions of Dahl fans while at the same time creating an entirely new opportunity for CBS Radio and digital marketers to work with the original founding father of talk radio." Dahl was pulled off JACK FM back in December. more ›
Hey, it's the 30th anniversary of Steve Dahl's Disco Demolition -- wherein the hatred of disco fed into rabid (kinda) rioting at ye olde Comiskey Pary -- so obviously it's time to interview the man behind the madness! Thankfully, Dahl claims he's keeping it down to one print interview and and two TV interviews this time around. The Trib got the exclusive print interview, and who better to delve deep into the mind of Steve Dahl than probing questioner ... Steve Dahl? more ›
"They were saying, 'Well, do a couple of weeks, a farewell.'" Dahl said. "I said, 'It's not a farewell. You guys are taking me off the air. I'm not retiring.' ... "I still have 2 1/2 years left on my deal so, quite frankly, I'm not letting them out of it."The move isn't exactly surprising, as the ratings for Dahl's show were less than stellar. Dahl has enjoyed a 30+ year career in Chicago radio, his pairing with Garry Meier leaving an indelible impression on the hearts of Chicagoans throughout the late 70s and 80s. Where Dahl will end up is of course not known, but will likely be at his Florida condo twiddling his thumbs as stations aren't exactly scrambling to sign million dollar talent. It's already rumored that WJMK will replace Dahl's show with a stream of WBBM-AM news, apparently to introduce Felicia Middlebrooks to a younger audience. Yeah, that should work out just fine. more ›
And if I were Steve Dahl, I'd take a break from telling women what I think they should do with their bodies and what clothing they're "allowed" to wear. Anyway, isn't the term "tramp stamp" sort of passé? I've been hearing "ass antlers" and "Jersey plates" recently. more ›
We've written about the onetime powerhouse lineup of the Loop, AM 1000 in a previous flashback. It's almost sad to see that, twenty years later, Jonathan Brandmeier never outgrew his "Wait'll Otis sees us" Delta House on-air persona (though for some it still works), Kevin Matthews became a right-wing nut and Garry Meier just imploded. more ›
Two years ago, in our review of Eleven City Diner on South Wabash, we compared Brad Rubin's tribute to classic Jewish delis and diners to the Blues Brothers. We said it was "too good to be a parody, not good enough to be the real thing." That still holds true, which is a blessing and a curse. Shortly after ours and other reviews started pouring in, Rubin pulled the plug on all night weekend service, which would have brought Eleven City closer to the genuine article. The prices are nothing to laugh at, either. We've had more than one friend chew us out on the prices after recommending the place. more ›
We're feeling punchy here at Chicagoist HQ today--blame the cabin fever, the extra coffee, whatever you like. But writing about Steve Dahl this morning, all we could think about was Dhalsim from Street Fighter. more ›
I had no intention of ever going through with the Dating Game idea, once I got off the air and had the chance to think it through. Besides, Drew is still legally married, so he’s not really allowed to date yet. I’m very old school. What can I say?more ›
8:30 So plan on Dating Game with Drew tomorrow at 8 unless they change their mind. If they were smart they would. If there is a date Steve's going to chaperone. He'd love to get the film rights to something like that. more ›
So the word is semi-official, according to Robert Feder ... Steve Dahl is moving from afternoons at WCKG to take over mornings on WJMK, better known as JACK-FM. On one hand this move makes perfect sense. No one has really dominated Chicago's morning-drive since Mancow's popularity plummeted, and Howard Stern took to satellite. Dahl is a pretty dependable commodity that we're reasonably certain will deliver the ratings. At the same time, WJMK has been the... more ›
As we reported the other day, the rumored switch from talk/classic rock to Spanish language programming would mean that some of WCKG's (105.9 FM) top programming needs a new home. more ›
No, the Bulls aren't looking to flee Chicago, or even the United Center for that matter. But they might be hunting for a new radio station to broadcast their games. more ›
Mention fish tacos to people and chances are that they either give you the gas face and say “Eewww!”, or repeat the term and giggle. Simply typing those words conjures in our mind innuendo-laced memories of our Uncle Stu holding his index and middle fingers to his mouth, flicking his tongue between them and talking about how he loved "eating fish on Friday at the 'Y'." Today’s Tribune, however, is all about fish tacos. Kevin... more ›
We couldn't go through this day without paying our respects to DIsco Demolition, a day that will live in White Sox infamy. Today is the 28th anniversary of the event (the You Tube clip included here was from the event's silver anniversary). There's not much we can add to the day, except to read the Wiki entry. Even that doesn't do the event justice to the chaos that ensued. more ›
When WLIT starts playing Christmas music after Halloween next year, Chicagoans will have no one to blame but themselves. more ›
Ratings books are out for Chicago radio stations, but there are few surprises for those who’ve been paying attention. more ›
Okay, so Chicagoist is buckling under the pressure and finally hopping on the biggest bandwagon yet of 2005: we're telling you about podcasts (for those not in the know, we're talking about that Web-based audio format that essentially allows anyone to self-publish a syndicated audio program via MP3 player or iPod). New podcasts have been popping up like weeds throughout the past few months, and a few of our own hometown media outlets are here... more ›
While some think disco slowly fizzled out, Chicagoans knows disco went out in a spectacular blaze of glory 25 years ago. Tonight marks the 25th anniversary of Disco Demolition Night at the old Comiskey Park. The brainchild of DJ Steve Dahl, the planned festivities were to blow up some disco record on the field between games of a double header against the Detroit Tigers. more ›
