It's a Small "Ist-A-Verse" After All

It's a Small "Ist-A-Verse" After All

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and... more ›

Apple Release New iPods, and We Swoon (Again)

Apple Release New iPods, and We Swoon (Again)

Why is it that we don't get butterflies in our stomach and run up to the nearest computer store to check out the newest Dell products or when a new Motorola phone is announced we don't hop over to a cell store? Well, they aren't Apple. So what did our loyal leader, Steve Jobs, have to show us today? Ringtones, the iPod Classic, the iPod Touch, and the iPod nano. We wish we could... more ›

Weekend Extra: The Best of the Week in the Global "Ist" Village

Weekend Extra: The Best of the Week in the Global "Ist" Village

Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt,... more ›

iPhone, youPhone, he-she-itPhones

iPhone, youPhone, he-she-itPhones

Sometimes we long for the old days when there were no cell phones. Text messaging was only for the über-rich Skytel set, and there was no reminder to silence your phones at the beginning of every concert, movie, poetry reading, dance recital, etc. It was much quieter then. And much, much cheaper. But in 2007 we are all carrying around computers in our pockets. Just over thirty years ago, in order to get a fraction... more ›

iPhone Lands in Chicago

iPhone Lands in Chicago

Earlier this week, accompanied by armed guards, and carefully escorted onto American soil, the first shipment of iPhones began to arrive. The creator of the ubiqitous iPod, has the PR buzz (or Reality Distortion Field) in full effect, and we can't remember so many people ever caring so much about a cell phone. No one really got excited about the new Blackberry (even if they are promoted by John Mayer), and when an updated TREO... more ›

Mac Zealots, Break Out Those Shopping Carts, MUSH!

Mac Zealots, Break Out Those Shopping Carts, MUSH!

It feels a bit like Alaska outside, but there probably isn’t enough snow on the streets to go dog sledding (it won’t stop us from trying). Luckily, for those who really want to scream “MUSH!” at a couple of dogs or friends, there is the Chiditarod. On March 3, over 100 participants will go tearing through the streets of Chicago in shopping carts pulled by a four of their best friends, or worst enemies depending... more ›

Motorola Isn't Scared of the iPhone! Just Look at Our Choice of Punctuation!

Motorola Isn't Scared of the iPhone! Just Look at Our Choice of Punctuation!

Chicagoist admits that we're salivating over the announcement of the Apple iPhone as much as anyone, but as we discussed last week, we have some doubts about it too. After playing that guessing game once, however, we've decided to reserve further judgment until it's released to the public in June, when people not named Jobs have actually held an iPhone in their hands and put it through its paces. This hasn't stopped the hype machine... more ›

Chicago Gets WiMAXed Out

Chicago Gets WiMAXed Out

As a commenter on our iPhone post pointed out, there was another exciting wireless technology announcement this week sure to set Windy City geeks' hearts aflutter, and it's something that actually one-ups the vaunted love child of Steve Jobs and Cingular. Sprint announced that Chicago would be one of two initial metro areas to get WiMAX coverage (D.C. being the other). WiMAX is a fourth-generation wireless broadband technology that could reach speeds close to those... more ›

The iPhone Has Landed

The iPhone Has Landed

That sound you heard yesterday was the collective orgasm of gadget freaks, Mac nerds, and tech investors all over the world when Apple announced the new iPhone, the long-awaited convergence of the iPod with a cell phone and PDA. We'll spare you the technical details--chances are you heard one of the IT guys whooping it up at work yesterday, but let's just say that Steve Jobs has managed to package sex into a 3x5 piece of plastic and metal. more ›

Decent Days and Nights

Decent Days and Nights

We hope you’ve been saving your money, because the shows we’re looking at this week are a bit pricey. We’ll be scanning Craigslist for someone looking to offload their tix cheap. Why, oh why, isn’t there a Hot Tix for shows? Now removed from the avalanche of hype that surrounded their last shows here, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah returns to town for a pair of shows at The Vic. Expect fewer people who “heard... more ›

Geeks-R-Us: 2005 In Review

It may seem like Chicagoist is cool, but really we're big time nerds. We get off on geeky new gadgets and websites and blogs. And we're not ashamed of it either. Let's look back at the nerdiest Chicago-area things that caught our attention in 2005. more ›

Holiday Reading Powered By Complex Carbs

Holiday Reading Powered By Complex Carbs

The tryptophan seems to have worn off by now but we’re still gorging ourselves on Thanksgiving leftovers here at the Chicagoist offices. And it’s hard for some of us to do any real work while we’re all bloaty so we’ve been catching up on some online reading. more ›

Rock Different

Rock Different

Since iPods are threatening to reach critical mass (thanks in part to the minis), it’s time for Apple to crank up the exclusivity factor again. And that means new features, a new paint job, and a ringing endorsement from the biggest band in the world right now. The big announcements out of Cupertino this week that Apple would be selling a U2 signature version of the iPod as well as iPod Photo only confirmed a rumor that quickly evolved into a foregone conclusion within the Apple community. Which is cool and all but Chicagoist is pissed we’ve got to wait until November for the iPod Socks (iSocks?) pictured above. more ›
