Chicagoist Podcast: Summer Vacation
It's summer vacation time here at the Chicagoist offices and our own podcast is not immune to such schedule changes. Over the next two weeks, there will be no Chicagoist Podcast as we take a summer hiatus, but we'll return in mid-July with a whole host of new material and podcasts. As always, keep the email suggestions for future podcast topics coming in at Karl (at) Chicagoist (dot) com and catch up on some of the podcasts you may have missed, including:
Extra Extra: "Come on Wheels Make This Boy a Man" Edition
First person to name the song those lyrics in the headline came from gets a no-prize. Own some of Billy Corgan. Really. It's not a good idea to e-mail a Playboy playmate via Myspace, especially when said playmate is dating the Bears' Adam Archuleta, you're from Aurora, and type in bold threatening capital letters. Some Wisconsinites have a unique take on the designated driver. What did you do on your summer vacation? (via) Give...
Eddy Curry's Home Invaded
These are dangerous times to be a basketball star in this town. For the second time this month, a Chicago-native NBA star has been the victim of a home invasion.
It's Friday, Does Your Boss Know (or Care) Where You Are?
What we are writing right now probably isn't going to be read by half of our readers. Or that is the conclusion we have come to after reading this article in today's Sun-Times, which tracks the evolution of "summer Fridays." If you don't know what "summer Fridays" are, then you probably don't have them. And if you do, then Chicagoist is insanely jealous of you, you lucky bastard. Essentially, companies are realizing that during the...
Still Alive for Game Five
Down 3-0 and facing elimination from the playoffs, the Bulls finally beat Detroit on Sunday, winning 102-87. Unlike Game 3, the Bulls were able to hold onto their sizable lead this time. The Bulls extended a seven-point halftime lead to as much as 23 points before Detroit mounted a comeback. Detroit got as close as 87-80 before the Bulls again pulled away to close out the game. For the first time in the series, the...
Bulls Let Big Lead, Playoff Hopes Slip Away
It really looked like the Bulls were going to get themselves back into this series against the Detroit Pistons ... for a half anyway. In the second half, Detroit stormed back to beat the Bulls 81-74.
Theater Season 06-07: Meet Your Neighbors
September is traditionally the start of Chicago’s theater season. But since there’s no real off-season, we can simply take heart that local houses big and small are rolling out their big guns and, for the next few months, we’ll never have an excuse not to get our butts in the seats. The theater community has all sorts of personalities, here are just a few: This weekend The Grand Dame: Shakespeare Theatre Hamlet by You Know...
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Even as the stores sport back to school sales (which depress us, even now), summer lingers on your friends the -ists. This week's collection of links provides some of the best, worst, and oddest bits of summer fun. So, bring your laptop up onto the roof, make yourself an umbrella drink or ten, and enjoy this week's choice posts from across the Gothamist network. Pilfered Plastic Pigs
Twenty plastic pigs have disappeared from a lawn in suburban Mundelein. St. Mary of the Annunciation Church near Mundelein had been "renting plastic pigs to parishioners to offset the cost of an upcoming trip and to promote the church's annual pork and corn roast in early August." The theft leaves the church's youth group with only 10 pigs left to rent for their fund raiser.
