Jean Sliwinski was convicted of reckless homicide today and was also deemed mentally ill. She'll be sentenced November 26. George Ryan is supposed to report to prison November 7...unless Judge Posner's emphatic dissent is enough to convince the 7th Circuit to extend Ryan's bail until his case can be appealed to the Supreme Court. There are people who enjoy Ricky Henderson jokes. There are people who enjoy Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me jokes. Then......

Alright, Chicagoistas, we’ve got a bone to pick with you. We hemmed and hawed, we stayed up nights wrestling with it … but per your request, we resurrected a bigger better faster more version of our new-and-unheralded, interactive music column called You Tell Me. Next, we charged you guys with finding the cream amongst crap. We thought the first round went pretty well, but we didn’t get many workable suggestions last week. What gives,......

Guess what’s back (and WAY better than ever)…? Yep, it’s You Tell Me, Chicagoist’s weekly, slightly-masochistic-yet-wildly-awesome column where we ask you the reader to give us the skinny on the under-the-radar shows that keep the people hopping around the city. We tried this a couple of weeks back and had a great suggestion, but realized YTM needed a bit of tune up to get into summer racing shape. Thanks to some seriously fine suggestions......

The You Tell Me Cookie of the Week goes to “some guy,” who suggested that we check out new Chicago transplants The Whole Fantastic World last night at the Darkroom. This dedicated reader’s description (“Spoon playing the Police as prog rockers”) combined with our love of the Darkroom’s comfy booths on our weekend-weary bums proved to be an irresistible Sunday night, so we took a deep breath, ordered a cocktail, and settled in for......

Welcome to You Tell Me, where Chicagoist opens our eyes and ears to the good music fans of Chicago for suggestions on what to check out, and where, this week. Here’s the basic idea: You’re in a totally killer post-punk band. Your boy/girlfriend is in jazz trio. Your roommate’s cousin has this great funk collective that plays every Wednesday night at a dive in Uptown. You know they’re out there because you’ve got a personal......

Hard though it may be to believe, occasionally we at Chicagoist carry differing viewpoints. These tend to manifest themselves most strongly when it comes to discussion of the arts, though we have learned that the way to resolve contrasting opinions need not be through a duel to the death. Anymore. So with that in mind, we decided to hand associate editor Scott Smith and music critic Tankboy each a copy of the new Catfish......

Thirty-six years ago Vashti Bunyan released an album that was haunting and different than all the other folk musicians out there. She has been touted as creating "psych-folk" and then, like many musicians, the singer kind of forgot about her voice amidst lukewarm sales and everything that life throws at us. Now she's back with Lookaftering and is playing a pair of shows with Archer Prewitt. Monday/Tuesday, Lakeshore Theater, 7 p.m., $15 advanced/$20 door, All......

Chicagoist is a huge fan of our own homegrown media industry. We like the original stuff that comes out of this city and telling our folks things like how we walk through Gotham City on our way to work and visit County General every time we have a boo-boo. So, as always, it was a lot of fun to sit in on last night's taping of "Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me". Host Peter Sagal informed......

We’ve already told you about the weekly tapings of locally produced NPR hit Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. We decided to attend yesterday's taping when we heard that Sarah Silverman was to be a call-in guest, since we honestly can’t get enough of that gal. Though we do admit to being totally mystified as to why a woman that cool is dating Jimmy Kimmel. Ah, those vexing mysteries of life. We arrived at the taping......

Last week, Chicagoist sat in on the weekly recording of "Wait, Wait -- Don't Tell Me!" "Wait, Wait" is a weekly program on NPR that packages the week's news in a quiz show format where callers work with panelists to answer questions about the important stories of the week. (It actually's a bit more complicated than that, so listen to the show online to get the full scoop.) The taping was done deep in the......

Millennium Park is finally opening, late and over budget as all good things are. Now that were a few years into this millennium, were probably better able to enjoy its futuristic features. But we dont want to be grouchy: were actually really excited not only for this weekends events but for the park in general. Today kicks off the three-day opening celebration with music, dancing, and a lantern installation. From 5-7:30, check out the polka......
