The Bachelor is premiering next week, and we always find the show to be interesting in a "hi I am determined to find the love of my life" kind of way. We often think about how sometimes eliciting sexual attention or “meeting someone” can be so contrived and forced. This week saw favored reality show contestants from Chicago bite the dust, further proving that people from our fine city just can't win on trite, ridiculous shows that require little talent! Who knew that U of C's DOC Films has been showing movies for 75 years? (Rhetorical question, as we're sure that many of you already knew that.) Well, they have. In fact they're the longest continuously running student film society in the U.S. As you can imagine, they've collected a lot of cool mementos in that time. Things like letters from Samuel Fuller and Jean Renoir, movie posters autographed by Hitchcock, and old programing calendars. And, yes, Fritz Lang's martini recipe (we're anxious to compare it Buñuel's). They're putting some of the neater stuff on display with a new exhibition which opens today and runs through August 31 at the school's Joseph Regenstein Library, 1110 E. 57th St. There's an opening reception this afternoon from 3:00 to 4:30 in the gallery. more ›

A new season of “The Apprentice” begins on NBC January 7, and the opening lineup of contestants includes two women from the Chicago area. Aimee, who is 32, was raised in Elmhurst and most recently managed sales for a top medical company. She thinks she ought to be the next Apprentice because “I am wicked smart, tenacious and have insightful interpersonal skills, as well as a high level of integrity.” Nicole, 25, was born and raised in Naperville. She worked 2-3 jobs simultaneously while attending college and now owns a real estate acquisition corporation. She says, “I have the education, real estate experience and an undying will to succeed at everything I do.” more ›

Chicagoist's best friend in New York used to room with Alex Michael from the first season of The Bachelor. Aside from being really arrogant and self-centered, Alex spent every waking moment riding out his 15 minutes of reality TV fame. Calling girls on their birthday, making special appearances, etc. And since we like never hear of Bill Rancic actually working on the Trump Tower, but always hear about him doing promos and charity events, we're guessing that's what his deal is too. more ›

Chicagoan Jen Schefft has been selected to be the star of ABC's The Bachelorette 3. Jen was the winner of season 3 of The Bachelor when Andrew Firestone proposed to her. Not surprisingly the couple broke up. An interesting side note is that Chicagoan and Trump Apprentice Bill Rancic had been under consideration for Andrew's roll on The Bachelor 3.
