Staging the New Year

Staging the New Year

  • Black Ensemble Theater’s home grown musical Sounds So Good, Makes You Wanna Holler (Old School vs. Nu Skool), which tracks two generations of musical strivers, is the main attraction of the company’s year-end party. The $120 ticket gets you dinner, the show, an open mic, and a champagne toast.

    Thursday Night Summer Camp

    Thursday Night Summer Camp

If you like your summer entertainment light, campy and frequently hilarious, you’ve probably already bought your tickets for It Came From The Neo-Futurarium VI: Curse of The Neo-Futurarium. In case you haven’t or (gasp!) missed the first V years, the Neo-Futurists’ summer tradition dredges pop culture memories from childhood, younger adulthood and your history books every Thursday night, reading scripts from movies and TV shows whose original, sincere impulses have been diminished by midnight screenings and years of ridicule. more ›

    You're Asking for It!

    You're Asking for It!

Anyone who's seen The Neo-Futurists’ weekly show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind knows the purveyors of this evening of rapid-fire entertainment regularly rely on the audience for seriocomic inspiration. We've seen these performers take up a collection for a poor college kid, treat random ticket holders to ice cream treats, start an impromptu dance party, and enlist the entire room in silent protest against the invasion of Iraq. The Neos also produce... more ›

    New Year's Eve Spotlight

Now that Santa’s returned to the North Pole and Hanukkah Harry has commenced his rounds, it’s time to focus on New Year’s Eve. Maybe you’ve already ponied up your $100 or more to celebrate that sharp new desk calendar. Or maybe you’ve sworn off Saturday night as an overblown, overhyped, overpriced holiday. If you’re in that second category, consider spending 2005’s final hours at the theater, a more reasonably priced alternative where you leave the... more ›

Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop Explodes In Chicago

Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop Explodes In Chicago

If last week’s Sugar Water Festival at Northerly Island had you yearning for more neo-soul stylings, then you’ll want to spend your Friday nights in August at the DuSable Museum of African-American History for the 4th Annual Neo-Soul Explosion. Organizers of The Neo-Soul Explosion brag that it’s the place in Chicago to see rising stars in soul, jazz, and funk. That’s usually a risky statement to make but the NSE has delivered the goods in... more ›

    30 Bands, 60 Minutes

    30 Bands, 60 Minutes

One of the best weekend activities in Chicago is watching experimental theatre troupe the Neo-Futurists perform their weekly, ever-evolving show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. With the help of some raucous (read: drunken) audience participation, they miraculously put on 30 plays – comedic, political, and dramatic sketches of varying lengths – in 60 minutes. These crazy geniuses even determine your admission price based on the roll of a die and order pizza for audiences at sold-out shows. For good reason, it’s Chicago’s longest running theatre tradition. (Late Night Catechism be damned.) more ›
