Chicagoland Speedskater and Olympic Gold Medalist Shani Davis just took the Gold Medal in the 1,000-meter World Single Distance Championships, in Nagano, Japan. He also wiped out the track record with a time of 1:08.99, finishing just .04 seconds ahead of Russian Yevgeny Lalenkov.

We love buffalo wings. And with the recent 2nd place finish for wing-demolishing competetive eater Patrick Bertoletti at Wing Bowl, Chicago's upcoming Wingfest, a TOC article from Mike Nagrant (also featuring Bertoletti) about local wingeries, the press orgy about Melnick's uberhot wings and the general gluttony of chicken parts that will be kicking off in a few hours (there's a game on, too? who knew!), we thought it might be a good time to pay tribute to the under appreciated wing.

It's hard to believe it's taken the universe this long to combine parades, insane traffic and the ability to punch the living shit out of stuff. But that combo has arrived. Downtown. Today. Yes, at 4pm this afternoon, around 700 boxers, here to punchasize your face for the the AIBA World Boxing Championship, will walk from the Palmer House Hilton to the Chicago Theater in a 4-block parade.

World Sport Chicago, an organization that has helped spearhead Chicago's 2016 OIympic Bid, is working hard to bring international sporting events to Chicago to strengthen that bid. This weekend is an example of that effort; the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team will take on Italy here in Chicago as part of the FIVB World League. The World League is composed of the top 16 men's volleyball teams in the world divided into four pools. The...

It looks like the Tribune has more than just money and stockholder problems these days. Glommed from the Reader's Food Chain blog yesterday is this article about the politics of modern eating. In her attempt at writing a humorous piece (vegetarians are acid casualties with their own bad eating habits, haven't heard that before), Emily Nunn comes across instead as obstinate toward and proudly ignorant of what we would know about where our food comes...

Learn Something: Looking for a little culinary education in the coming week? Get your cheese and beer on at The Chopping Block in Lincoln Square on March 8. For an even forty bucks you get to meet Goose Island brewmaster Greg Hall and learn all about artisan cheeses and gloriously strong stout. New Chef: Never been to Boka Restaurant? Or perhaps you've been but weren't all that impressed. Well, Giuseppe Tentori is the restaurant's...

The folks over at U.S. Soccer House, in the Prairie Avenue Historical District, have announced their intentions to submit a bid for the 2018 World Cup. The United States hosted a successful World Cup in 1994, which included games at Soldier Field. The World Cup took place last summer in Germany and will next be played in South Africa in 2010. The 2014 World Cup is expected to go to a South American country, though...

Frank Lloyd Wright may have been one of the greatest architects of our time. Let us rephrase, Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the greatest architects of our time. Intrestingly enough however, Frank Lloyd Wright was kind of ... well … how do we say it, kind of an asshole.

A group known as Gospel Music Capitol of the World Productions wants the City of Chicago to purchase and restore the Chicago Defender building and use it to house an International Gospel Museum. (We know this might be the pot calling the kettle black, but shouldn’t that be Gospel Music C-A-P-I-T-A-L Of The World Productions?) The release cites a recent Chicago Sun-Times article that quotes David Bahlman, president of the former Landmarks Preservation Council of...

October is almost upon us, which means it’s time for cool weather, trick-or-treating and more film festivals than you can shake a sprocket at. The Chicago International Film Festival begins next week with the Humanities, Reeling and Music Box Masascre fests soon to follow. This weekend is the appetizer to that full-course meal as the Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival begins tonight and runs through Sunday. The schedule is impossible to find through their main...

There's a 4-day immigration march here this weekend. A pipe bomb exploded in a Metra station today. No one was hurt. One day he's a superstar, the next day, eh, not so much... Obama lost his 'favorite son' status in Kenya after making statements critical of Kenya's corruption and ethnic divisions. Dorothy Brown is running for mayor. A study was released on Wednesday that found dangerous mercury levels at 10 top Chicago-area sushi restaurant....

A new poll conducted by Scarborough Research shows that the White Sox are rapidly gaining popularity in Chicago -- even approaching the Cubs. If the trend continues, the Sox may even pass up the Cubs in popularity very soon.

LAist is flashing a sad peace out to their editor Carolyn Kellogg with one hand and bumping knuckles with their new head typist L.A. blogger king Tony Pierce with the other. Where do ist editors go when they hang up the 'editorial we'? They take on MySpace, apparently. At least Ben Brown does. Austinist reminds of the just rewards of less savory careers this week and then they witness the Arctic Monkeys and We Are...

During a two-year process, approximately 200 nations competed for one of 32 coveted spots in the 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals. What are the rest of the teams left to do while the best teams prepare for the world's biggest sporting event? Many are scheduled to be opponents in final warm-up matches for teams that have qualified. The United States, for example, is simulating the first round of the World Cup by playing three matches...

A smorgasbord for the mind, the 2005 Chicago Humanities Festival has rolled into town. This year’s theme is Home and Away, concerning “the role that ‘place’ serves in the creation of our sense of rootedness and belonging.” Sounds like Pretentious-English-Major-speak, but an impressive slate of writers, musicians and performers are addressing such hot button issues as globalization, mobility, national identity, and bridging regional differences. Most tickets are $5, a bargain that ensures many sold out...

In convincing fashion, the 2005 Sox demonstrated that they are clearly the best team in the American League, defeating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 5 games. After dropping Game 1 to the Angels and squeaking by in the controversial Game 2, the Sox headed out to Anaheim and dominated the Angels, winning all three games to clinch the AL Pennant.

Saturday night at the Park West, Chicagoist was entertained by Mike Doughty and his band of the same name. Trying hard not to pummel one another with our actual glass bottles (how nice to be treated like an adult at a concert), we settled into an evening of Mike creating a very intimate experience for the 900-person capacity venue. Jumping right into “Tremendous Brunettes” from his latest CD Haughty Melodic, the former Soul Coughing...

Tim Pruitt caught a blue catfish in Illinois last Saturday and it was fucking huge. The biggest ever caught in Illinois. The biggest ever caught in THE WORLD. This sucker tipped the scales at 124 pounds and 58 inches long.

Remember that scene from the end of the movie Real Genius when Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" is playing and the house fills up with popcorn, shatters the windows, and piles out.. then everyone comes to play in the popcorn and eat it? That's exactly what came to mind when we found out that a popcorn factory just west of the Loop caught on fire last night. Pop, pop, pop.. and the Loop fills up! But.. sigh.. that wasn't the case. We can only dream!

We're always in favor of more places to see movies, especially if those places are in close proximity to alcohol. So the news that Smartbar is now hosting a FREE Tuesday night movie night (via DVD projection) called "The Reel Deal" was welcome indeed. Bad news: you have to be 21+. Good news: they're showing two (tenuously thematically connected) classic cult films per night (plus an entire showing of the BBC's The Office on March...

Last time Chicagoist went to a chocolate party, we woke up next to a log cabin republican, and his dog knute. We hope we have better luck this year at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s must-attend event, The World of Chocolate. Chicago’s finest chocolatiers, restaurants, caterers, and hotels will provide a spread like none seen since Augustus Gloop tanked into Willie Wonka’s cocoa canal. This year we plan to smuggle in a milk chug under our cumber bund, thank the stars we haven’t yet put on our winter weight!

One of Chicagoist's first fans, Chris, tipped us off that today is the last day to see the movie The Saddest Music in the World at the Music Box Theater. Chicagoist has not seen this movie yet, but Chris and everyone else is saying it is great - funny and sad and completely unpredictable. If we didn't already have plans for tonight we'd be there.
