Here are some things to do this evening to consider bringing your voter receipt.
Is it just us, or has this week sucked ass? It seems like everyone we've talked to has wanted to stab the whole world in the neck this week. At least we have a bunch of things to do that are awesome..... The Old Town School of Folk Music has its annual craft fair tonight, plus their monthly First Friday series. Tomorrow, bust out your wallet at Renegade Craft Fair's holiday bonanza. We've noticed...
Listen up all you single residents of Chicago: Andy Eliason, of The Canadian, "Canada's new socially progressive and cross-cultural national newspaper," has some dating advice for you in his piece, "Things to do when you are single in Chicago." He says if you are single in Chicago, the first thing you need to do is "find someone else who happens to be single in Chicago, and you have to be willing to take the steps...
Some things to do this weekend, and into next, as an excuse to dress in costume. Rare and fine wine auction house Hart Davis Hart is holding an auction of private collections from both coasts today from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Tru. The auction is free to attend, but anyone taking the time to head to Tru and not eat is an idiot, quite frankly. Lunch today at Tru is fixed-priced at $75....
One of Chicagoist’s things to do before we die is to gamble in a casino. A lofty goal, we know. Our one previous attempt at a Quad Cities riverboat ended in a DQ, as we weren’t old enough and our mother had left her driver’s license at the hotel. We know it’s way less glamorous than movies would have us think, but damn if we don’t want to feel the chips in our fingers and...
We are fully aware that this weekend feature might as well be called "Chicagoist Likes Cool Old Buildings." We're fine with that. A couple weeks ago we focused on the changes - or a lack thereof - on Michigan Avenue at Wacker. Today we're taking a quick trip across the river - to the Tribune Building.
Let's start the buffet off with this video this video singing the praises of the Harold's 6-piece wing dinner. The language is NSFW, but if you're watching this in the office, you're probably the only one left, so crank it. Memorial Day is the (un)official start of grilling season. We've had the grill on an eternal flame for two months now, but loaded up on fresh vegetables from the farmer's market, tri-tip steaks from...
We've always considered ourselves to have quite a bit of confidence in our city, stepping onto the pavement this morning, seeing happy people and their dogs, we couldn't help but smile and take a deep breath of some long awaited warm air. It's always important to stay on top of the game though, so this weekend we thought we would take a stab at improving on this. We agree with the Chicago Center for Green...
Chicagoist is always trying to learn new things, and we know you are too. This week, we learn about the appropriate places to do our nails, the real value of pants, and why the state of Indiana should be more careful when issuing drivers licenses.
The Trib's On the Town music editor decided that since it's Friday the 13th, he would deal with one of the most pressing issues of our time - which band is it necessary to see before we all go to that gig in the sky?
While reading the news this morning, Chicagoist saw one more reminder of why we’re glad we went to a state school. The Tribune and Sun-Times are reporting Julita Groszko, 31. was “charged with two counts of aggravated arson, three counts of attempted aggravated arson and felony criminal damage to property” after allegedly setting fires on the University of Chicago’s campus. Upon questioning, she revealed to police that she set the fires because the work at...
Chicagoist is only going to give this a modicum of space because just thinking about this gives us such incredible, mind-numbing, back-breaking cramps and there isn't enough Vicodin and Wild Turkey in the world to put us out of our misery. Look. This whole foie gras thing is getting way out of hand. Seriously, people, we cannot believe that there is a possibility that the city council will ban it. And all of you animal...
It’s a bad sign when even watching the news makes you miserable. While the flood waters have started to recede along the Gulf Coast and positive stories are emerging about Katrina survivors reunited with their families, the 24/7 aftermath coverage and Oprah’s inspired but rather graphic reporting have worn us down. As we approach the anniversary of another tragedy, we will set aside time to reflect but still plan to get on with our weekend....
Frequent are the days, especially in summer, when Chicagoist finds ourselves struggling to make a decision between two or more fabulous things to do. Of course, we're usually deciding between work and sleep, but tomorrow night is something special. We know what we're doing, mainly because our roommate has never in her 24 years seen Star Wars, but we also really wish we could go to the Bookslut Reading Series at the Hopleaf. It's the second of a monthly series put together by the fine folks at Bookslut--we heard the first was awesome, and tomorrow's reading promises to be swell as well. And entirely free of light sabers! (We assume.)
And we don't mean the kind with the tomatoes and the onions and the mustard. The drooling, lick your face, Sammy kind of dog is what we're talking.
Since Chicagoist doesn't have a job right now, we didn't try to attend the sold out shows at the Vic this week by Chicago's very own Billy Corgan. It does look like that it may not have been so difficult a task to get tickets to the 2nd show, but by then we were well into our couch recovering from the 4th's festivities.
As always, there's a shitload of things to do this weekend. Go out have fun and don't forget to pick up some packs of sparklers. Even if you don't use them this year, it may be the last year you can get them legally... and you never know when a little sparkler action's gonna be needed. Stock up now. So here we go -
The Tribune's website has a big ol' package on things to do in the city this Memorial Day weekend; it includes a rundown of the "top shows" this summer. Some are a bit pricey and a few weeks away. So if you're stuck in town for the weekend but feel like trying something different, here are a few places that offer live music for little or nothing.
This Chicagoist does not subscribe to cable television. He likes to think he has much more important things to do than waste time watching cable TV. But really he just spends entirely too much time fiddling with an antenna (a placebo more than anything) so he can see Judge Mathis roll his eyes without static and periodic blares of white noise. Now he will say he doesn't subscribe to cable because having it installed is too risky.
Fuck low-carb diets. Feed your dissent on Sunday at The Grand Feast, where 12 restaurants on Grand Ave. will be dishing up their specialties. Participating restaurants, including Thyme, Caf Fresco, and Canella's, will be serving a "grand feast" wine dinners this weekend, too.
