Here at Chicagoist we're all about DIY. (That's "Do It Yourself," by the way.) Chicagoist itself is DIY. Not to toot our own horn, but most of us here are unpaid volunteers whose recompense consists of the chance to share really cool stuff with you, our readers, and trigger interesting conversations (and getting jiggy with the occasional celebrity).

This Friday night (parents, remember those?), with your cranky kid in tow, will you waste the evening pining over the date nights you wish you still had, or just go out anyway, dammit? When you opt for the latter, run to J. Alexander’s. This place is scrumptious food and considerate service in a chain restaurant’s clothing. Our family had a leisurely two-course meal in 40 minutes flat. We were home before our kid even began to whimper.
It seems everybody is complaining about the delays on the El and is looking for alternative methods of getting to work. This Friday is a great opportunity to give your bike a tryout for the job. The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is hosting its fifth annual Winter Bike to Work Day on Friday, January 19.
This Friday, December 9, Sara Moulton is going to be at Pastoral and you're invited to stop by and meet her. If her name sounds familiar, there's a good reason. Sara is the Executive Chef of Gourmet Magazine; hosts a popular show on the Food Network, Sara's Secrets; has written several books; and has a pretty cool blog. From 5pm - 7pm stop by to grab a copy of her new book Sara's Secrets for...
Chicagoist always hears conservative political pundits say that money won’t solve the problems of the inner city. That giving more money to failing public schools – schools where teachers have to provide their own chalk and where the actual buildings are falling into disrepair – is not the solution to rising violence, falling test scores, and a system that seems to be falling apart before our very eyes.
At Chicagoist, we have a lot of love in our hearts: for our friends, our colleagues, our readers, and even our critics. It’s not always easy to express our appreciation for everyone who visits our humble little site.
This Friday the Inter-American Magnet School is hosting their first annual spring benefit, Noche Cultural, from 6pm - 8:30pm.
One of Chicagoist's favorite bands, Magnus, was recently selected as one of 2004's best unsigned bands by the Illinois Entertainer. This Friday at Metro IE is having it's Best of Around Hear showcase, featuring Magnus and two other great local bands, The Bon Mots and Canasta.
This Friday at the Music Box marks the long awaited (by Chicagoist, anyway) rerelease of Jacques Tati's classic Playtime (and, for better or worse, influence on Steven Spielberg's The Terminal). Like Francis Ford Coppola with his similarly neglected One From The Heart, Tati went all crazy Orson Welles on this one, demanding that an entire city be constructed on a soundstage. And again like Coppola, constructing that city on a back-lot effectively bankrupted him. But what a way to go out!
What Chicagoist loves about David Sedaris is that the stories of his messed up childhood and family not only make us laugh hysterically, but they make us feel like ours aren't really that bad. We've read most everything David has written - his books, his Slate diary, his Esquire articles, we even love Dave's brother's website and the fact that Dave's sister makes cupcakes and sells them in NYC. We're crazy for everything Sedaris. Chicagoist bought mp3s of Live at Carnegie Hall and listened to them on our commute, trying not to laugh outload and appear to be a raving lunatic on the el. So we were so excited when a reader wrote in and told us that David is going to be in Chicago this weekend to promote his new book, "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim". Let the stalking begin!
