If we were to describe this movie update post using song titles … In an email last week, long-time Chicago Filmmakers program director Patrick Friel announced he will be stepping down on August 10 to pursue other interests. He had been with Chicago Filmmakers for over eleven years. A replacement has not been announced yet. Also in his email was news that there will be opportunities to become involved with the programming of their weekly...
While we tend to wear skirts or dresses about 350 days of the year, we’d be lying if we said jeans played had no place in our wardrobe. Although we don’t wear them as often as many of our friends, few clothing options offer as much versatility as a sharp pair of jeans.
Will the Wicker Park and Bucktown gallery scene become another West Loop, an explosion of art spaces on a few shabby-chic blocks? The Wicker Park and Bucktown Gallery Association hopes not. In this week’s Chicago Journal, Around the Coyote Gallery Director and WPBGA Founder Allison Stites talks about how she'd like to preserve the organic feel of the neighborhood art scene. Recently, music geeks and fans of funny shit on the Internet were saddened to hear that Channel 101’s Yacht Rock series had come to an end. Over the past year, the show quasi-fictionally chronicled the lives of artists like Michael McDonald, Hall and Oates, Toto and Christopher Cross. They ruled the FM airwaves in the 70s and 80s with an iron fist, wrapped in a velvet glove.
The Chicago Rush have earned a playoff berth in each of their five years in the Arena Football League. After suffering their worst loss of the season, 55-20 in Atlanta this weekend, the Rush need to find some success in the remaining two weeks of the season if they hope to continue their playoff streak.
Our town’s known for big honking summer festivals. They draw the tourists and our friends from Schaumberg to spend their hard earned cash and contemplate someday moving here. Those of us living here already know the real joy of a Chicago summer lies in the smaller neighborhood fests. Chicagoist can’t wait to grab a kabob and exotic pastry and take in some local culture.
This Saturday night, Chicagoist Editor Rachelle Bowden (a.k.a. Chicagoist Prime) and Gapers Block editor and co-founder Andrew Huff are the featured guests on ImprovOlympic’s answer to Leno and Letterman—The Late Night Late Show. Hosts Mark Luge and Amit Mahtaney, channeling Craig Kilbourn and Ali G, respectively, stay up late every Saturday night to chat with Chicago celebrities and personalities. L.N.L.S. is mostly a straight-up talk show sprinkled with liberal doses of improv. Come out...
With all the planes flying just overhead, Chicagoist has deduced that either we're being attacked (orange alert! ...er, red alert?) or it's Air and Water Show weekend. Thankfully, it's the latter. Well, "thankfully" in that there will be tons of people in Chicagoist's neighborhood over the next few days and parking will be a mess. We need to escape from Old Town, fast, and Doc Films fortunately has a solution. This Saturday they'll be playing Hoop Dreams, a quintessential Chicago film. We call it quintessential because this classic documentary provides a touching, in-depth portrait of our city's low-income residents and public school system. And besides all of the personal drama in the lives of its subjects, there's plenty of good basketball.
