Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week": Three Floyd's Fantabulous Resplendence X Anniversary Ale

If you don't like hoppy beers, just scroll past — this week's installment isn't for you. Just trust us on this. It's been a solid thirty minutes since we drained the bomber of Three Floyd's Fantabulous Resplendence X Anniversary Ale (known only as "X" from here on out), and the spice from the hops is still lingering in the back of our mouth. Speaking honestly here, we feel as though we've been intubated by ale.... more ›

Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week": Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout

Good American-made stouts are plentiful these days. With more breweries applying aging techniques to their beer, barrel-aged stouts are just as plentiful. Goose Island Bourbon County Stout benefits greatly from being allowed to age in 12-year-old Heaven Hill barrels. Three Floyd's DarkLord, the stout of the moment, has an aged version that uses barrels purchased from Woodford Reserve and allowed to sit for a year. Because wood is permeable, barrel aging allows a stout to... more ›

This week's theme: Cinco de Mayo. More specifically, the Anglicized version of Cinco de Mayo. Let's get on with it. Everyone Has An Opinion: In conjunction with National Hamburger Month, the folks at Yelp! have released a thoroughly underwhelming list of their top five places to get a burger in town. Springtime is perfect for red ales, and we picked up a six-pack of Ska's Pinstripe Red Ale a couple weeks back at Warehouse Liquors in the South Loop for $8.99. A bit overpriced, but Warehouse is one of those liquor stores that's convenient, and their staff is knowledgeable, even if the cashier said that Pinstripe reminded him of "Killian's, only sweeter." more ›

Chicagoist's "Beer of the Week": Three Floyd's Gumballhead Beer

Weeks back, Chicagoist professed our love for wheat beers, and you responded by drinking the Pontiac out of Bell's Oberon at our second anniversary party. Today we bring to you a wheat beer that's tough as nails, a beer not for the faint of heart. A beer so strong and bitter it could only be named after a crusty, bitter, comic strip cat. Three Floyd's Gumballhead Beer is, hands down, the hoppiest wheat beer we've... more ›
