Time Magazine awarded their annual "Person of the Year" to former Illinois Senator and now U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama. It doesn't really matter that the "Why We Chose Obama" section doesn't answer the question at all; most of us who have been following his historic campaign know why; besides being the nation's first black president, he was also the most galvanizing political figure not named Kennedy in quite some time. The mag has the requisite feature article, an interview, and even a column by Obama's brother-in-law, Craig Robinson.

Sheriff Dart Talks To Time
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, he of "We won't surprise tenants with an eviction order intended for their landlord" fame, recently sat down with Time Magazine to discuss the housing crisis and why he came to the decision he did.

Finishing the Fight, Chicago Style
Have you noticed the photos and merchandise featuring a green metal soldier throughout the city? At your local 7-Eleven there are Slurpee cups featuring the same soldier carrying a flag, there is a strange red-orange new flavor of Mountain Dew called Game Fuel, there is a commercial with a elderly man talking about the great battle where "Master Chief" saved his life, and there's another where "Master Chief" seemingly comes alive in the middle of a massive diorama. There are books, comics, web "machinima," toys, and even an article in Time Magazine. This is Halo.
The Unlikely Activist
One year after she took refuge inside a Humboldt Park storefront United Methodist church, immigration fugitive, mother, and unlikely activist for immigration reform Elvira Arellano announced that she would risk deportation by leaving the church to head to Washington, DC to lobby Congress for immigration reform. "If this government would separate me from my son, let them do it in front of the men and women who have the responsibility to fix this broken law...
Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network." It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by...
Ghetto Gourmet (no, not Popeyes) Coming to Town
Chicagoist always checks e-mail first thing in the morning. To us, email is the new teeth-brushing — something you have to do before you can move on to other parts of the day. Part of this morning ritual is seeing the Daily Candy e-mail in our inbox, trying to glean what it is about (please not another overpriced Bucktown boutique) and then promptly skipping over it. But today, we were intrigued, as the subject like...
Coming Out Of The Dark
One of the reasons why we like the Goodman Theatre (don’t start) and why it’s so quintessentially Chicago is that it never gets too big for its britches. They may be world-famous but they didn’t get named Best Regional Theater by Time Magazine for nothing.
If Daley's The Best, What Happens When We Get The Worst?
You can be sure that every pol in Illinois is talking about Time Magazine naming Mayor Richard M. Daley as one of the top five mayors in the nation. Much like a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed about Daley a couple of months ago, Time Magazine brushes aside the numerous recent city government scandals and entirely focuses on how good Daley is at the mechanics of providing city services. Naturally the Tribune and Sun Times grouse...
