Soon, and for a limited time, local restaurants may charge you for tap water - for a good reason. World Water Week is nearly upon us (March 21 - 27) and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF Tap Project is back in Chicago at participating restaurants. The project allows patrons in restaurant to donate $1 or more for the tap water they normally drink for free while dining out at participating restaurants. UNICEF tells us that your $1 can provide clean drinking water for a child for up to 40 days. more ›

Now in its third year, UNICEF's Tap Project has grown from a New York-specific one-off to a national event. Through Saturday restaurants throughout the country will ask customers to donate $1 (or more) to UNICEF for something — tap water — some of us may take for granted. more ›

Next week is UNICEF World Water Week, and even though there may or may not be trace levels of sex hormones and pharmaceuticals in our drinking water, at least we don't run the risk of catching dysentery every time we turn on the faucet.
