John McCain won big in last night's Republican primaries, winning nine states and pushing his delegate count up to 559--not enough to win the nomination, but big enough to secure his standing as the front runner. Mike Huckabee got a boost last night as well, winning a string of upsets in the Southern states, enough to justify his continued candidacy. Mitt Romney, however, has bigger problems, winning only a handful of states, and with Huckabee still in, he won't get the one-on-one race he so desperately wanted.

With the race for the Democratic nomination showdown just days away, and polls showing Obama closing in on Clinton in key Super Duper Tuesday states, the Obama campaign made a huge ad buy during the Super Bowl in the Super Tuesday states, including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Washington, (but, alas, not Illinois)

Made in Chicago has been buried under snow and soot for a minute, but on a cold, wintry day such as this, we're digging it out with another homemade gem to share with all of you to help you finish out the week.

We were downstairs at our neighbors' a couple weeks back, drinking bloody marys before the Bears-Broncos game while we were making chicken stock for soup. Normally, we make a killer bloody mary. But on this occasion we were missing something. Turned out that our neighbor had the cure-all: a good beer chaser. She had been to Sam's earlier in the week and picked up some selections from Ridgeway Brewing, and the first bottle she opened...

The Chicago Rush will work on their goal of repeating as ArenaBowl Champions when they kick-off their 2007 playoff run tonight against the Los Angeles Avengers at Allstate Arena. The winner of tonight's game will travel to San Jose for the semi-finals next weekend. So one way or another this is the last chance for fans in Chicago to see the Rush play at home this season.

Oscar fever has got us doing cartwheels all over the Chicagoist offices, as well as placing more than a few friendly wagers over who will be taking home those expensive doorstops come February 25th. But that’s not the only thing going down in the film world at the moment. A little gathering in Park City, Utah called the Sundance Film Festival has been underway since last week. And lest you shrug your shoulders indifferently just...

Way back in 2005 we told you about Crime Fiction, a movie made by students of the University of Chicago. When we last heard from them they were in the midst of post-production. Far from being the last step in the filmmaking process, post-production is merely the end of the beginning; for as any indie filmmaker will tell you, once you've "finished" your film the wheels of the industry can turn very very slowly when...

Quick: how many more days 'til the Oscars? Frankly, we don't care. However the Sundance Film Festival opens on January 18, an event which we've always daydreamed about but haven't been able to attend. This year's opener will bring a bit of Chicago to the usually-sleepy ski town of Park City, Utah: the documentary Chicago 10, directed by Brett Morgen. It chronicles the anti-war protests which accompanied the 1968 Democratic Convention and the subsequent trial...

"Only the Asbestos Remains" by marinaro500, who notes "Taylor Street Housing Projects are falling! Last week there were warning signs for asbestos."

Somewhere along the line, sheets with two holes and haunted hayrides lost their fright value. In order to keep up with the changing times, Halloween trends began leading more toward psychiatric ward-themed haunted houses and costumes of straitjacketed serial killers. Sure that kind of stuff can be scary, but this year the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is asking people to tone down the “mentally insane” themes from their Halloween festivities.

The Chicago Rush have earned a playoff berth in each of their five years in the Arena Football League. After suffering their worst loss of the season, 55-20 in Atlanta this weekend, the Rush need to find some success in the remaining two weeks of the season if they hope to continue their playoff streak.

In an annual standard of living report, Chicago came in (tied with Washington DC) at 41st place. The study ranks the quality of life in the world's major cities. Zurich came in first, Baghdad last. The top US city is Honolulu. It's nice out and everyone's pulling out their bikes, but who needs a bike when you've got the LimoJet? The Bean is finally finished. Junk food in schools is still ok for now....

In another move leading us into the glorious future where we'll never have to actually interact with real people, several states are looking to implement "virtual" visitation for divorced families.

Before the start of the NBA season, Chicagoist actually thought the Bulls would be comparable to last year's surprising 47-35 team. Boy were we wrong! Whereas last year's team regularly scraped and clawed to overcome early defecits and win games they had no business winning, this year's team has been following the opposite script. Monday night's loss to the Utah Jazz saw the Bulls give away the game not once, but twice. They jumped out...

The Tribune’s Mark Caro is a lucky guy. No sooner does his Pop Machine blog debut than he’s off to Park City, Utah to cover the Sundance Film Festival. Wait…you don’t suppose they planned it that way, do you? In any case, we’ve been getting a kick out of Caro’s warts-and-all coverage, especially his realization last week that people might, you know, read his blog. Unfortunately, this didn’t occur to Caro until after he took...

The NBA held its annual draft last night. In recent years, this was the biggest night of the year for the Bulls. This year, however, even John Paxon and Jerry Reinsdorf probably made other plans. Because of a trade for Bryce Drew during the Bulls' Dark Ages and last year's trade for Loul Deng, the Bulls were without a pick in the draft for the first time in their 40 year history. Which was probably...

The Bulls magical season came to a close Friday night as the Washington Wizards defeated the Bulls 94-91 in DC, winning the best-of-seven series 4-2. The entire game, it looked like the Bulls would hold of the Wiz and bring the series home to Chicago on Sunday. Up most of the game, the Bulls lost that lead in the final minute. Just about as soon as the final buzzer sounded, talk turned to next season's...

DePaul men's basketball coach Dave Leitao is expected to announce he is leaving DePaul to coach at Virginia. He returned to Chicago with an offer in hand and was expected to make a public announcement after speaking with his Blue Demon players. His new deal is supposedly worth $1.2 million plus incentives that could take it higher -- double his current $600,000 deal at DePaul.

Hey, next time your heading out to your car don't forget your hand-free listening device. You'll want to practice getting used to wearing it because it may soon be what you'll need to use your cell phone while driving.

At the outset of the NBA season, Chicagoist fearlessly predicted that the Bulls would make the playoffs. Surely, many we were questioning how the Bulls might reach the 37 victories we predicted. Especially when the team started 0-9. But now we don't look so wrong, do we?

In case you have already given up on the Bulls this season following their 0-9 start (tied for worst in franchise history), don't look now but we may have another dynasty on our hands. The Bulls have won two of their last three games!

8 months ago Fannie May was shut down after 84 years in business when their parent company, Archibald Candy, went bankrupt. But never fear: Alpine Confections, based in Utah, bought the Fannie May and Fanny Farmer brands in federal bankruptcy court last April for a mere $38.9 million. Under new ownership, Chicago-based Fannie May candy stores are reopening for business.

It's true: Chicagoist tends to display its political stripes now and then. But generally we try not to get too brazen, because frankly, politics is not our main interest. So we ask you... Nay! Beg you! Please do not judge us by our reporting on the daily nuttiness of Alan Keyes. When he tees it up, we just have to hit it. OK?
