24 Places and Grant Park Ain't One

24 Places and Grant Park Ain't One

Oh man, we almost forgot about the Children's Museum debate! Luckily, Alderman Brendan Reilly wants to keep it front and center, which is why he sent the Museum a list of 24 possible places it could relocate that aren't Grant Park: more ›

Gotham Returns to Chicago

Gotham Returns to Chicago

Our sharp-eyed reader Dave at Fighting the Suburbs caught this last night on the way home: the building at Wacker and Van Buren being decked out as Gotham National Bank. The new Batman film The Dark Knight is filming various scenes in and around town for the next several weeks. We also have reports that they've been looking for extras and stand-ins, so if you think you resemble Christian Bale or Heath Ledger you... more ›

Happy Kwanzaa!

Happy Kwanzaa!

While we like to think of ourselves as culturally aware, we have to admit that we are pretty unaware when it comes to Kwanzaa. Aside from seeing a small exhibit about the holiday at the DuSable Museum of African-American History, and hearing a woman at the post office wishing a clerk a “Happy Kwanzaa!” (the first we’d ever heard it said, mind you), our encounters with the celebration have been few and far between. more ›

South Loop Building Fire

South Loop Building Fire

Yesterday’s fire in the South Loop had an impact on the present and took away a part of Chicago’s past. The building that caught fire was the Witt Dexter Commerical Loft Building at 630 S. Wabash. Firefighters battled the blaze into the night, the CTA’s Loop elevated trains were shut down, and nearby buildings were evacuated. Here’s what you need to know for your morning commute: Green Line and Orange Line service is currently... more ›

Countdown To Safer Crosswalks

Countdown To Safer Crosswalks

If you’re like Chicagoist, the longer you live in the city, the more of an expert you become on calculating traffic lights. We now know exactly how much time it takes us to cross each street in our daily commute and at which point we’ll have to run to make it across before the light turns. And the people who don’t know these things and hesitate unnecessarily? Well, they just get in our way. more ›

Fill Every Inch With Ads, Just Don't Raise Fares

Fill Every Inch With Ads, Just Don't Raise Fares

This week Chicagoist has been noticing advertising on CTA turnstiles, particularly at the Quincy, LaSalle/Van Buren, Monroe, and Library-State stations. Which.. you know.. we don't really like, but understand that the CTA needs some dough so they're selling off every inch of blank space to advertisers. Fine. Make some money, keep all the train and bus lines, don't hike the fares.. we'll look at the ads.. Great! more ›

Fighting Festival Fatigue

Fighting Festival Fatigue

Our town’s known for big honking summer festivals. They draw the tourists and our friends from Schaumberg to spend their hard earned cash and contemplate someday moving here. Those of us living here already know the real joy of a Chicago summer lies in the smaller neighborhood fests. Chicagoist can’t wait to grab a kabob and exotic pastry and take in some local culture. more ›

Trib Gets Loopy

Trib Gets Loopy

It might be worth shelling out for Tribunes this week. They have an in-depth feature on the Loop, and we think it might be losing a little something online. Plus you get to have newspaper smell all up in your face. Today's installment in the Unauthorized Loop is a history lesson, and, if the rest of this week is as slow as today, well recap the daily updates the rest of this week. Definitely... more ›

CTA Proposes Silver Line

CTA Proposes Silver Line

The CTA is considering constructing a Silver Line that would connect the Blue and Green Lines. The proposed line would run between the Ashland stop of the Green Line, and the Harrison junction, where the Forest Park and Cermak Blue Lines meet. Theres not a station there, so it sounds like theyd put one in. Other proposed Silver Line stations include a stop at Madison for the United Center (good call) and one on Van Buren. more ›
