After being an assistant coach for 20 years and leading the Bulls to a league-best 62-20 record, coach Tom Thibodeau will be named NBA's Coach of the year Sunday according to multiple reports. The announcement is expected to be made at 3:30 p.m. at the Berto Center.
It's Tom Time: Sources Report Thibodeau Wins Coach of the Year
Bulls and Thibodeau Reach Deal
While his hiring won't be officially announced until after the conclusion of the NBA FInals, the Bulls and Celtics assistant head coach Tom Thibodeau have reached a deal for him to become the Bulls next head coach, with a three year deal worth approximately $6.5 million. Perhaps Thibodeau does not have the head coaching experience many thought the Bulls desired, but he has been an NBA assistant for 18 years with seven teams (the past three with the Celtics), and plenty of experience coaching in the playoffs. Back when the Bulls hired Vinny Del Negro in 2008 Thibodeau's name regularly came up in discussions, and we thought Bulls management was foolish for not waiting to interview Thibodeau before making their decision. With the Celtics winning the NBA title that season, the Bulls chose to hire VDN before the playoffs ended rather than wait to interview the guy that was perhaps the best available candidate. Better late than never, the Bulls finally had a chance to interview Thibodeau this time around and decided to hire him after that meeting.
Bulls Fire Del Negro
Vinny Del Negro is out as Bulls coach. With a big free agent market coming this off-season, who will the Bulls go after to coach the team now?

Vinny Del Negro Era Drawing To A Close
For Bulls' coach Vinny del Negro, it seems his firing is not so much "if" but rather "when"
Vultures Already Circling Over Coach Vinny
To be fair, the topic of Bulls coach Vinny del Negro's employment has been the subject of speculation for most of the season. And after that reported dust-up with Pax, his firing is inevitable. In fact, we're surprised he's lasted long. So why do we feel so bad that reports of his replacement are already starting to surface? Former New Orleans Hornets coach Byron Scott talked to ESPN Radio 1000 today and said he's open to talking job opps with the team (Scott has also coached the New Jersey Nets).
Did Paxson And Del Negro Come To Blows?
We're not quite sure how this story remained bottled up for two weeks, but it's just now leaking that Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro was shoved by John Paxson, their vice president of basketball operations, on March 30. Reports say that Pax confronted Del Negro in the coach's office following a game against Phoenix, shoving the coach twice and challenging him to a fight before assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff restrained the former Bulls point guard. The source of the heated confrontation was playing time for Joakim Noah, who had recently returned to action after an extended absence due to plantar fasciitis. Coach Vinny had played Noah 2:05 over his 25 minute limit, and Paxson was none too happy -- when the coach last played his starting center over his time limit, Noah missed the next 10 games. And the team lost all of 'em.
Coach Vinny Twists In The Wind
As reports surfaced yesterday that Coach Vinny was on the way out - just as soon as the Bulls' front office got its act together to find a replacement - now comes the standard silence from management. For his part, Del Negro is still saying all the right coach things, though with a hint of "Dead Man Walking."
Report: Coach Vinny Done, Search On For Replacement
According to a report by ESPN, Coach Vinny's days with the Bulls are numbered and a delay in his firing is due to the inability by the front office to find a replacement. Team VP of basketball operations John Paxson mulled taking the position himself but decided against it. The team also reportedly reached out to former coach Doug Collins who also turned down the job. As the ESPN report points out, the Bulls will have some cap space this summer when the league will have one of its more impressive free agent pools in recent history and the team wants a permanent replacement done by then.
Morning Box Score: Bulls Blown Out At Home
After their surprising game one victory and close loss in game two coming on a buzzer beater, the Bulls looked up to the task of challenging the defending NBA champs in their best-of-seven series as it moved back to Chicago. With their rabid fans all dressed in red to give them the added boost, surely the Bulls could regain the series lead against the Boston Celtics, right?
Bulls Make Big Trade Ahead of Deadline, Part II
Do the Bulls have a hotline that rings directly to Madison Square Garden? The New York Knicks remain the dumping grounds for the Bulls unwanted parts, even after they parted ways with Isiah Thomas -- the worst executive in the history of basketball. This afternoon, just before the NBA trading deadline, the Bulls shipped Larry Hughes to New York in return for three players: Tim Thomas, Jerome James and Anthony Roberson.
Bulls Shakeup Coming?
We'll take this rumor with a grain of salt, seeing as it's coming from the NY Post's Peter Vescey, but he's reporting that John Paxson is out as the Bulls' GM soon after next week's trading deadline passes, and that Vinny del Negro will likely be out of a job at the end of the season, too. Vescey expects another round of wooing Doug Collins by Jerry Reinsdorf to fill one or both vacancies.
Bulls' Season On The Brink
With the Bulls off on their second extended road trip of the season -- this time exiled by Disney on Ice -- their season is on the brink. At seven games below .500 and sporting a 5-17 road record, the team that's already outside looking in with regards to the playoffs might just be positioned for another high lottery pick come June.
Aaaaaaaand Now! Your 2008-2009 Chicago Bulls!
A year ago, many -- us included -- believed the Bulls were on the verge of competing for the Eastern Conference title, even if it wasn't quite yet time to reserve Grant Park for any rallies. The young Bulls team fell flat on their face and cost Scott Skiles his job on the way to a 33-49 record, missing the playoffs after three consecutive appearances. Tonight, they open the 2008-2009 season at the United Center against the Milwaukee Bucks and their new head coach, Scott Skiles.
Bulls' Hughes Out...But For How Long?
In Wednesday's preseason tune-up leading up to their regular season opener next week, Bulls guard Larry Hughes suffered a dislocated shoulder. In the third quarter, Hughes collided with Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Mike Miller while chasing after a loose ball and slumped to the floor in pain.
Bulls Work Out Potential Top Picks
Having won the NBA Draft Lottery, the Bulls are free to select any player available -- but the consensus top two players are power forward Michael Beasley from Kansas State and point guard Derrick Rose of Memphis. With the choice pretty much narrowed to those two, the Bulls are bringing each in for personal workouts and interviews this week.
What Was Pax Thinking?
Vinny Del Negro? Really, Pax? You spent seven weeks searching and interviewing at least 13 candidates for the next coach of the Chicago Bulls and that's what you come up with? A guy with no prior coaching experience?
Bulls Set To Pick Del Negro To Coach
The Chicago Bulls have offered the head coach position to Vinny Del Negro, and he's going to accept, according to the Trib. Del Negro is currently the Phoenix Suns' assistant GM.
