Cubs Part Ways With Silva

A wild weekend for the Cubs ended with the team releasing pitcher Carlos Silva on Sunday, forcing the team to eat many millions left on his contract. The move came a day after Silva learned he was the odd man out when the Cubs announced their 25-man roster. Andrew Cashner was named their fifth starter while Marcos Mateo earned the final spot in the bullpen. With Silva left off the team, The Cubs told him they hoped to trade him, or else he could pitch for Triple-A Iowa. more ›

Guzman Leans Towards Risky Surgery

The Cubs were dealt yet another blow to their hopes of ever winning a World Series title when pitcher Angel Guzman suffered a potentially career-ending injury last week. Following MRI tests that confirms the team's worst fears, Cubs GM Jim Hendry called Guzman's injury "a significant tear" and a "ligament injury," in the front, bottom part of the right shoulder -- one that players rarely recover from. One treatment option for Guzman would be to try and strengthen the muscles near the injury, a process that would take at least four to six week to determine whether it was working. Instead, Guzman seems to be leaning towards surgery -- even though the risky operation very well might end his career. more ›

  • Open their home season on April 12th versus Milwaukee
  • play the AL West in Interleague play, traveling to Texas (May 21-23) and Seattle (June 22-24) while they welcome Oakland (June 15-17) and Anaheim (June 18-20) to town.

Soriano Done For Year

It's not nearly as devastating as the Bears losing Urlacher in Week One - especially given the fact that the Cubs season is already done - but another Chicago athlete is done for his season. Alfonso Soriano will have surgery on his bum left knee tomorrow, meaning he's done for 2009. Soriano says rehab will take six weeks and he should be ready to go by Spring Training 2010.
